What Do Professional Athletes Eat?

We all know that professional athletes engage in a strict regimen of diet and exercise. We all know that they eat upwards of ten thousand calories each and every day. This is necessary when the body is constantly burning those calories through demanding physical labor. When all you do is work out all day long, you need the extra boost. But what do professional athletes actually put into their bodies each day? The quick answer is this: lots of protein.

But of course it’s more complicated than that.

For someone who loves to eat, the diet is a dream come true. LeBron James has discussed his diet with interviewers in the recent past. For him, a typical game day begins with as many healthy nutrients as he can get: an omelet made with egg whites, hold the yolk, and smoked salmon (for healthy fats and omega-3s). Both options provide a lot of protein. He also adds a stack of gluten-free pancakes (no one asked if he had gut-health problems). To add a few more vitamins, he added blueberries to the stack.

He had another helping of salmon for lunch, in addition to servings of whole wheat — not gluten-free — pasta and veggies. More nutrients, healthy fats, omega-3s, and lots of carbs for energy. Directly before the game he would consume a single PB&J. Stomach cramps during a game wouldn’t be so good, now would they?

He also enjoys a small snack during halftime, when he would consume yet more protein and vitamins with apple and almond butter. In order to make the most gains from his strenuous game-day workout, he would drink a protein shake as soon as the game was finished. The shakes are usually made from fruit, almond milk and protein powder. He noted that in the hours following a game, he would avoid animal products and whey-based protein powder. 

For other professional athletes, it’s not all about the food — it’s about staying properly hydrated. Anyone who’s ever done long-term physical training knows the benefits of keeping water on hand. Tom Brady starts his days with lots of water (with added electrolytes) to ensure he doesn’t get dehydrated from the day before. He doesn’t drink water when enjoying a meal because he believes it will prevent his body from digesting food properly — but that’s an old wives tale. Water actually helps your body break down food.

The rest of Brady’s day includes lots of liquid protein and nutrients, fish, tons of veggies, and constant snacking. He said his diet was 80 percent alkalizing foods, and he avoids foods that create a lot of acid in the digestive tract.

Football Season Is Here: Who Will Come Out On Top?

We’re sure everyone is ready to vegetate on the couch with a cold beer in hand as often as possible over the next few months, which means everyone’s favorite game is already in full swing. It also means the guessing game has begun. Everyone is busy making their best-guess fantasy football picks. Who will win? Who will lose? It’s time to lay out the 2019 season the best we can.

That means breaking down each team individually. The Oakland Raiders have been amidst a great deal of chaos and controversy lately, especially when considering Antonio Brown’s request to be released from the team this past Saturday at the end of a long bout of drama — which the team later granted.

Head Coach Jon Gruden said, “We just have exhausted everything. We tried every way possible to make it work. And all I’m gonna say is it’s disappointing. I’m really proud of our players, our coaches, our owner, our front office. We did everything we could to make this work and I’m sorry it didn’t. I apologize, but I’ll tell you, I’m very proud of what we did as an organization to try.”

Meanwhile, Brown is just happy to be up for grabs again.

Gruden said of the departure: “I wish Antonio the best. I’m sorry we never got a chance to see him in silver and black. Very disappointing in my career as a coach. I looked forward to coaching him but it’s not going to happen. I’m not going to sit here and talk about it all day. We’ve got 12 rookies, we’ve got a lot to be excited about.”

That begs the question: where do the Raiders stand this year? The gambling world isn’t giving the team glowing odds — instead, the favorite for this Monday night are the Denver Broncos. No surprise there. The Broncos have rivaled the Raiders for a long while, but Denver usually comes out on top, and the same result is expected tomorrow night.

The total betting pool for Monday night stands at 43 points with the under at 9-0 for Denver. Both teams have a long hard road if they want to make it to the end.

How Do Professional Athletes Train To Stay Fit For Game Day?

You know how the average adult male requires about 2500 calories per day? The average adult female requires even less, needing only about 2000 calories a day to keep a healthy metabolism running the way it should. But these numbers don’t even come close to the unbelievable caloric intake of professional athletes, who require thousands more. Most notably, Olympian swimmer Michael Phelps would consume around 12,000 calories during his training days.

Athletes require this increased number of calories for an obvious reason: they burn them off faster than the rest of us.

Part of a professional athlete’s training regimen isn’t just about gaining the strength and endurance to compete at a higher level; no, it’s about reducing the chance of injury during a game or race. This means that even athletes who don’t necessarily need huge biceps will lift weights. They do these exercises to increase bone density and get their joints, tendons, and ligaments ready for the pressures of later performance.

Athletes who fail to take these weight training measures will often fall victim to common injuries like tendinitis or a torn ligament. Another reason they train all their muscles instead of just the ones they require to play their chosen sport is due to the potential for muscle imbalance. Our bodies are built to maintain a certain equilibrium of movement: we require balance. Too much training of one muscle group will result in reduced dexterity and balance.

Athletes use a variety of exercises to help achieve their goals: 

  • Elastic bands. Dozens of exercises can be performed with the aid of an elastic band, which helps athletes gain muscle, endurance, and joint strength.
  • Sleep. Athletes make sure they get at least eight hours of sleep, which is recommended for all adults anyway. The required rest helps the body repair itself while building back up.
  • Compound movement. These exercises focus on multiple muscle groups instead of just one in order to increase joint resistance.
  • Jumping. Exercises that involve jumping will help players who use these skills in their sport learn to be safe.
  • Hydrating. Non-professional athletes often make the mistake of failing to drink enough water. A professional athlete won’t be caught dead thirsty.
  • Walking. Sounds somewhat mundane, right? But walking can do wonders for sore, stiff muscles that aren’t ready for another extreme bout of exercise yet.
  • Running and swimming. Both of these exercises are common, but athletes will perform them for much longer periods of time in order to gain god-like endurance and train muscles that don’t otherwise see much use.

Rene Rivera Turning Heads After Three Long Balls For The Mets

Sunday afternoon saw a fierce game of baseball played at Sahlen Field, where Mets catcher Rene Rivera managed three home runs. Syracuse pounded Buffalo into the ground 10 to 4. The 35-year-old managed a few early-game upsets against Conor Fisk and Jordan Romano. The three long balls he hit to score those runs pushed his number up to twelve for the year — which is no small feat.

Syracuse hitting coach Joel Chimelis had this to say: “I don’t think anyone knew. He was the one that told me that this was his first three-homer game in his career. I was like, ‘Wow, that’s awesome.’ He was pretty excited about it.”

“His body works right,” Chimelis continued. “He still uses his lower half very well when he gets into position, so he creates some torque when he’s going well. We have a bunch of older players on the team and each one always tries to help out. They always communicate and if they see something, they let the players know or let me know.”

Rivera is known for going the distance to help out the newbies. He knows what it was like at the beginning of his career and how hard it was pushing to make it higher and higher. Now that he’s about where it wants to be in his career, he wants to help those who still have a way to go: he even sees it as a responsibility that veteran players should always have. He’s not the only player who agrees with that point of view.

Chimelis later said that Rivera was “always one of the first ones in the cage and has a routine with a heavy bat and some drills. They know he’s going to be there. He’s usually the first one to hit and when he’s not, the players are like, ‘Hey, where’s Rene? What’s going on?’ So when they see stuff like that it makes everyone else have a routine. They wear me out sometimes. I’ve been coaching for a while and these guys love to hit and get their work in.”

Other players aren’t slacking, either. Danny Espinosa managed two doubles, Ruben Tejada got one out of three good hits, and Luis Guillorme struck a home run during his four game hits. Bo Bichette nabbed three hits. Not too shabby at all.

Odell Beckham JR Traded To The Browns?

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, for The Cleveland Browns 2019 first-round, second-round, and third-round draft pick plus their safety Jabril Peppers the New York Giants traded Odell Beckham Jr. It is a moved that stunned Football fans across the country.

Odell famous for his one-handed catch had moments of glory with The NY Giants, however, despite his great playing did not bring them any true victories. It also didn’t help that he was injury prone. But Cleveland Brown fans who are notorious for supporting the worst team in the league should be jumping for joy. Breakout QB Baker Mayfield and other additions to the team such as Javris Landy, Nick Chubb, and Kareem Hunt will give the Browns a fighting chance this year. But as previously mentioned, Odell has spent a lot of time on the injury reserve list. He missed 12 games in 2017 with a broken ankle and he missed the final four games in 2018 with an injury to his quad.

As upset as Giants fans are, Odell leaving the Giants was inevitable. Odell was very vocal about how dissatisfied he was with the new head coach Pat Shurmur often throwing temper tantrums and storming off the field during right before halftime. He was also caught criticizing his team in front of celebrities. We hope the change of scenery is good for Odell who can hopefully get the Browns to an over 500 record, something that has not been accomplished since 2007.

It also does help that LeBron James (if you don’t know who he is why are you reading a sports website) is friends with Odell. After hearing the news the basketball player tweeted “OH MY!!!! S*#% just got REAL!!” There are already rumors that Odell will be crashing with James at his mansion while he gets settled.

With this trade, it feels that the New York Giants have accepted a bad season for 2019 and are focusing on 2020. Let’s hope one of these three draft picks they get a quarterback they so desperately need.

Common Injuries During Professional And Casual Football Games

Serious injury is common during football games both professional and casual, although death as a result of playing is still rare. That said, the possibility of fatal injury is still a common concern especially in high school or college games. These are the most common injuries that players often experience as a result of being on the field.

  1. There’s a reason that so many athletes receive hamstring massages before, during, or after a big game. It’s because a strain of this muscle is one of the most common injuries on the field. The muscle cluster runs from the butt all the way down to behind the knee. Football players are most likely to injure themselves this way during a kick or while running.

  2. Players will often tear important ligaments in or around the knee. This most often occurs when the surrounding muscles haven’t been exercised or used properly before continuous or repetitive exercise or activity. They prevent an athlete from moving or running, and can take a player out of the game for an entire season.

  3. A rotator cuff strain is another injury that players will incur, most often after a bad throw or a poor tackle. The four muscles of the rotator cuff act as a support at the shoulder joint, and straining or tearing any of these muscles can result in extreme pain.

  4. As with any athlete, shin splints are a common concern. This injury, also called tibial stress syndrome, results from inflammation in the muscles and tendons that help support the shinbone. It’s painful, and must be treated with rest.

  5. Not surprisingly, football players incur concussions at a phenomenally high rate regardless of whether the game is professional or casual. Football players experience concussion at a rate of about 75 percent. Growing awareness of this statistic is why many people joke that we’ll all be watching our kids play flag football in a hundred years.

  6. Chuck Hughes of the Detroit Lions is the only player in the NFL to have died on the field. He had a family history of heart disease, and an underlying condition that had gone unnoticed. He dropped during a game, and began to have convulsions after blood flow to his heart was completely cut off. He was pronounced dead after a visit to the hospital.  

A Brief History Of Football: Then Until Now

It’s a running joke that we’ll be watching flag football in fifty years instead of what we watch today as each generation seems to soften, but that joke begs the question: How has football evolved over the years? Where did it begin and how did it gain popularity? Has it always been played professionally? We’ll answer a few of the most common questions regarding the history of one of the most popular sports in the country.

The first football-like game was played in the U.S. on November 6, 1869 between Rutgers and Princeton in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The rules were different from those we know today, but were developed by the London Football Association. Football is a hybrid of the popular English sports soccer and rugby. Football isn’t even the right terminology. “Gridiron” football found its name due to the vertical yard lines on the field.

Of course, that all gives the very wrong impression that England is responsible for soccer, if soccer is indeed one of the original ingredients of American football. The Chinese played something similar over the preceding centuries. The English adaptation of games that evolved over time was called football because it wasn’t played on horseback, like other popular games in the 19th century. The rules back then didn’t resemble soccer OR the football we know and love today.

The concept of organization and opposing goalkeeping originated in Scotland in the 20th century, long after the original games were invented. The new style didn’t make its way to Europe until the 1920s, which means, you guessed it: the football-like game first played in New Jersey in 1869 was also very different and lacked rules with which we’re familiar.

This is part of the reason that the European “football” (soccer) and American football grew to become so very different. Our version became popular very quickly. Harvard and Yale played their first collegiate game in 1875. Walter Camp was a student at Yale from 1876 to 1881, and he helped introduce new rules: such as an 11-man team. He was also responsible for giving us a quarterback, signal-calling, scoring, and the line of scrimmage. The rest is history!

The Worst NFL Logos of All Time

While there has been some major controversy over the Washington Red Skins, their name, and logo, there have been some major travesties over the years. Some of the logos that used to exist within the NFL, according to Navarrete and Schwartz are offensive as well as just plain ugly. Here are some of the worst defenders.

New York Saints Cartoon

From the years 1967 to 1984, this was the logo of the New Orlean Saints.  Currently, the logo of the Saints is a fleur-de-lis as pictured on this cartoon character’s shield. He appears to be some sort of knight but he isn’t really playing football or doing anything threatening. Good thing they retired this logo.

Houston Oilers Logo 

This logo was used from 1961 to 1968. The team is now the Tennessee Titans who also have a less than desired logo. But this logo is well, nothing more than an oil rig.  Who wants to wear an oil rig on the side of their head? We are glad that the team decided to move and change names.

The Dolphins Ray of Sunshine 

This current logo of the Miami Dolphins which has been used since 2013 is a travesty. We know that Florida is the sunshine state but why does Miami need to have it in their logo? This looks like a flying dolphin too close to the sun. Now all I can picture is this poor Dolphin dying because he’s not near any water.

NFL Injuries Taking A Toll on Fantasy Football

Fantasy football is simple in theory. You build a team made up of real players in real leagues and your performance is dictated by how well those players do on a week to week basis during the regular NFL season. Unfortunately a string of recent injuries has put a dampener on the outlook of many who take part in these fantasy football leagues. A lot of people were unhappy on the outcome. Here are a few of the early injuries that plagued this football season by week four.

Alshon Jeffery of the Eagles hadn’t even played a game before his status was put in doubt by an illness.

Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints obtained a knee injury that limited his ability to play during the pregame injury report, but he was eventually removed from the list.

LeSean McCoy of Bills fame incurred an injury to his ribs and Marcus Murphy was also in dire shape. Both were listed as questionable to play in games, putting a lot of pressure on other players after the team smashed the Vikings.

The Texans were in trouble after their receiver DeAndre Hopkins landed a slew of injuries–hamstring, thumb and ankle–that earned him a questionable to play listing. Will Fuller’s status was also limited.

Keenan Allen of the Chargers was also having trouble keeping the pace when the team was poised to face the 49ers.

Case Keenum of the Denver Broncos injured his knee during a pregame injury report.

Leonary Fournette of the Jacksonville Jaguars fell to a right hamstring strain after a week one game.

Aaron Rodgers of the Packers was listed as questionable to play in week four after a knee injury took him out. Randall Cobb had a hamstring injury, and Jimmy Graham also turned up on the injury report early on.

Ryan Tannehill of the Miami Dolphins injured his right shoulder.

Marcus Mariota of the Tennessee Titans injured his right elbow.

Perhaps the Patriots had the most to overcome early on in the season with a wave of players falling to questionable status on the injury report–eleven in all. Josh Gordon and Rob Gronkowski were among those whose ability to play was in doubt. That’s bad timing since Julian Edelman was still suspended at the time.

Of course some of these players would inevitably make it off the injury list and continue to play, but the early injuries took their toll on fantasy football.

NFL: All The Arrests Made in 2018 So Far

The NFL is notorious for their players having lots of legal troubles. However, based on a report by USA Today, the number of arrests in 2018 alone are staggering. Here’s a break down of all the NFL arrests from January to August.

January – 6 arrests 

1/3/18 – T.J. Ward a Safety on TB was arrested on a drug charge. He was accused of marijuana possession based on a warrant from October of 2017. Not resolved.

1/12/18 – Reuben Foster a Linebacker on SF was arrested on a drug charge. He was accused of marijuana possession. Must participate in diversion program including drug testing and education.

1/14/18 – Carlos Henderson a Wide Receiver on DEN was arrested on a drug charge. He was a passenger in a car that was pulled over for speeding and was accused of marijuana possession. Not resolved.

1/14/18 – Jeremy Lane a Corner Back on SEA was arrested for DUI. He was pulled over for suspected drunk driving. Lane claims his blood alcohol level was .03 under the legal limit. Plead guilty to reckless driving, sentence suspended, two days of work crew.

1/19/18 – Robby Anderson a Wide Reciever on NYJ was arrested for eluding police. He was accused of reckless driving, resisting arrest, fleeing police and threatening a police officer’s family. He pled no contest to reckless driving and is serving six months probation.

1/25/18 – Marion Humphrey a Corner Back on BAL was arrested on a robbery charge. He is accused of stealing a $15 phone charger from his uber driver. Not resolved.

February – 2 arrests 

2/11/18 – Reuber Foster (the same as before) was arrested on a domestic violence charge. He was accused of domestic violence, possession of an assault rifle and making criminal threats. He pled no contest to weapons charge and sentenced to 232 hours of community service. The domestic violence charge was dropped.

2/26 – Dylan Donahue a Linebacker on NYJ was arrested on a DUI. He was accused of drunk driving, driving the wrong way on the Lincoln Tunnel and crashing into a bus. Blood alcohol level was 0.15 almost twice the legal limit. He pled guilty and had his license suspended. He is enrolled in an education program.

March – 5 arrests 

3/3/18 – Aidon Smith a Linebacker on OAK has a warrant for his arrest for domestic violence. He was accused of domestic violence and fleeing the scene of the crime. Not resolved. OAK cut him from the team two days later.

3/7/18 – Adam Gotsis a Defense End on DEN was arrested for sexual assault. He was accused of rape dating back to 2013 when Gotsis was a student at Georgia Tech. Not resolved.

3/19/18 – Zay Jones a Wide Reciever on BUF was arrested for vandalism. He was accused of breaking a glass window during a heated argument with his brother. The charges were eventually dropped by prosecutors.

3/23/18 – Duron Harmon a Safety on NE was arrested on a drug charge. He was accused of carrying 58 grams of marijuana inside his iced tea. Not resolved.

3/23/18 – Michael Bennett a Defense End for SEA was arrested and being brought up on charges for injuring an elderly security worker at the Super Bowl in 2017. Not resolved.

April – 2 arrests 

4/15/18 – Daryl Worley a Corner Back on PHI was arrested for DUI. He was accused of resisting arrest, being unconscious in his car on the highway and carrying a gun without a permit. Not resolved. He was released by PHI hours later.

4/15/18 – Trevor Davis a Wide Receiver on GB was arrested because he was an alleged bomb threat. He was accused of talking about explosives when checking into a flight in Los Angeles. The case was dropped by prosecutors.

May – 3 arrests 

5/2/18 – Robby Anderson (same as above) had a warrant out for his arrest for allegedly missing his court appearance regarding the incident above in January. The warrant was dropped due to a clerical error.

5/19/18 – Terrance Williams a Wide Receiver on DAL was arrested for public intoxication. Police found his Lamborghini abandoned, crashed into a pole. He is currently in a diversion program about alcohol awareness and paid restitution.

5/19/18 – Antwione Williams a Line Backer for MIN was arrested for a DUI. He was pulled over for speeding and was suspected of drunk driving. He pled guilty to a misdemeanor and is serving one year of probation.

June – 2 arrests 

6/2/18 – Chris Herndon a Tight End on NYJ was arrested for a DUI. He was suspected of driving intoxicated after he crashed his car. Not resolved.

6/15/18 – Marquez White a Corner Back on DAl was arrested on an assault charge. He was accused on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in a road rage accident. Not resolved.

July – 1 arrests 

7/14/18 – Ricky Seals-Jones a Tight End on ARI was arrested on an assault charge. He was accused of assault a hotel staffer in order to use the restroom. Not resolved.

August – 3 arrests 

8/5/18 – Antonio Callaway a Wide Receiver on CLE was arrested on a drug charge. He was pulled over for a traffic violation and accused of possessing marijuana and driving with a suspended license. Not resolved.

8/28/18 – Cayleb Jones a Wide Receiver on MIN was arrested for domestic violence. He is suspected of domestic violence, interfering with a 911 call and theft. Not resolved.

8/31/18 – Rico Gathers a Tight End on DAL was arrested on a drug charge. He was suspected of marijuana possession. Not resolved.
