Big South Conference Announces Four-Year Extension With Stony Brook In Football

The Big South Conference Council of Chief Executive Officers has unanimously approved a four-year associate football membership extension with Stony Brook University, it was announced today by Big South Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander. Stony Brook first joined the League as a football member in 2008 and its membership will extend through the 2015 season.

“Stony Brook has been an outstanding football member for the Big South Conference,” said Kallander. “They have strong leadership, are a class act, and obviously are very competitive. We are thrilled to extend our relationship with the Seawolves.”

Eachus, others find Patriot League a good football home

Hazleton’s Nate Eachus rushed for more than 2,100 yards his final year in high school. He racked up 28 touchdowns and was an all-state first team running back.

At Colgate University, Eachus has made a name for himself as being a hard-nosed runner and a disciplined worker who has amassed 1,851 yards in his first two years.

And still the question comes, why didn’t you go to Penn State?

It’s a question that’s asked more than one can imagine, but at Colgate, Eachus is doing just fine.

Darby looks to assume QB reins at Georgetown

Scott Darby couldn’t be happier with the new offense that the Georgetown University football program is running this season.

The former St. John’s Prep quarterback started the last four games for the Hoyas last season as a sophomore and is now vying for the starting job with sophomore Isaiah Kempf.

New offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude was formerly at Hofstra, but when the football program there was eliminated at the end of last season, Patenaude moved on to join head coach Kevin Kelly’s staff at Georgetown. Because the Hoyas had a lot of problems putting points on the board a year ago, Patenaude has instituted a run-and-shoot offense, with the intention of spreading the ball around and giving the quarterback added responsibilities.

Times, they are a-changing at Bethune-Cookman

floatedleftWhen the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats take the field on September 4 against Edward Waters College, a lot of things will look drastically different than they did a calendar year ago. They’ve got a new coach, new field, new logo, new offense, and a new attitude.

The first major change was at the head coaching position. Gone are the days of the flashy outfits, oversized belt buckles and snakeskin boots that came to be known as “Shine’s sideline attire.” Last December, B-CU named former Rutgers wide receivers coach Brian Jenkins the 10th head football coach in school history, replacing all-time winningest head coach Alvin Wyatt after 13 seasons at the helm. This summer the city of Daytona Beach installed new artificial turf to Municipal Stadium and B-CU has opted to scrap the traditional Wildcat logo that adorned helmets for a number of years in favor of a new logo that features a B and C interlocked with wildcat claws flanking each side.

New on campus, athletes aim to make their mark

floatedleftAlex Phelan quarterbacked Xaverian Brothers to a 12-0 record and a Division 1 Super Bowl title last fall, the program’s first crown since 1998. He was the Globe’s Division 1 Player of the Year after tossing 14 touchdown passes and scoring nine more.

So how did the 6-foot-1 southpaw prepare for his freshman season at Brown University?

“I spent four days a week lifting weights and the other three days doing running drills,’’ said Phelan, who joined his teammates in Providence for preseason work last Saturday. “I did a lot of speed and agility drills to get quicker and tried to add some muscle by adding more protein.’’

Ohimor is determined to earn the accolades

floatedleftWORCESTER — Off the field, Mude Ohimor may be mild-mannered. On the field? The Stoughton High product is anything but. A senior defensive end at Holy Cross, Ohimor has been tabbed the preseason Player of the Year by Patriot League coaches.

“I’d rather they give out awards at the end of the season,’’ said the 6-foot-3, 245-pound Ohimor. “I feel like I haven’t really done anything yet this season. It’s an honor that they think I’m going to do well this season, but I want to get out and actually live up to that.’’

Proving himself is no foreign concept to Ohimor. At the age of 13, he had to quell his parents’ concerns about the safety of the sport and whether the time commitment would affect his academics. Any apprehension has long since been squashed.

Lafayette football player working hard to beat Stage 3 cancer

Pete Bross would run a 20-yard sprint and find he then needed a five-minute rest.

A workout might be followed by a one-hour nap.

That might not be unusual for a 70-year-old. But Bross was just 18.

When he got fatigued, he pushed himself a little harder.

“Me being me, I was the tough guy,” Bross said recently. “I was, like, ‘I don’t need a doctor. I’m fine. I’m just out of shape.’”

Finally, at the urging of his girlfriend, Breanna Mazalewski, and with the dogged reluctance of his mother, Kay, to take no for an answer, he relented and agreed to a trip to the hospital emergency room.

Colgate football leans on star players

floatedrightWhen a football team enters the unknown of a new season, it helps to have all-conference players coming back at quarterback and running back.

Senior quarterback Greg Sullivan and junior running back Nate Eachus are probably the top two reasons Colgate football was picked to finish first in the Patriot League in a preseason poll of head coaches.

“Last year I had a good season, also my freshman year, but I’m going to try and lead by example,” Eachus said of his role on the team. “We lost a lot of seniors last year, so we need a lot of leadership to guide our team in the right direction.”

Maliska growing into HC job

Former Murdock standout to start for Crusaders.

floatedrightI never really thought about (playing at Holy Cross), but it was just a great opportunity, the academics and the playing level.
– Jack Maliska

WORCESTER — Jack Maliska’s Saturday activities were mostly limited to pregame stretching and in-game clapping on the Fitton Field sidelines last season.

He’s going to be a lot busier on game days in 2010.

Maliska, who played in just one game last year as a freshman, has shot to the top of the Holy Cross depth chart and is projected to be the Crusaders’ starting defensive tackle when the season opens in two weeks.

Hampton's Auffant competing for starting job with Holy Cross football

floatedleftSam Auffant’s freshman season at the College of the Holy Cross was a memorable one. It wasn’t memorable for the same reasons his high school football career at Winnacunnet High School was, though.

That’s because Auffant didn’t see a minute of live action in the fall of 2009 for the Crusaders varsity squad. Not exactly memorable in terms of stocking the trophy case, but memorable nonetheless. Auffant saw quality time with the Holy Cross JV team, but when it came to “the big club,” he was relegated to being one of their biggest fans.

Fast forward one year, and the now 6-foot-1, 184-pound running back from Hampton is in the mix for the starting tailback position this fall.

Hawks' offense, Kyle Frazier sharp in scrimmage

floatedrightAn efficient and balanced offensive performance highlighted the Monmouth University football team’s first intrasquad scrimmage of the 2010 preseason Saturday afternoon at Kessler Field.

“I was really happy how clean it was. Our efficiency all over the field was pretty good,” head coach Kevin Callahan said. “We played without many penalties, which is something we are always concerned about in the first scrimmage with referees. The offense had several extended-play drives, we were able to move the ball and anytime you can win the ball possession battle you have a chance to win.”

ODU Scrimmage #2

Coaching Staff Getting A Better Idea of the Two-Deep

On Saturday evening the ODU Football Monarchs returned to Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium for the second of four planned scrimmages this preseason. As the Monarchs had a good workout on situational football, the coaching staff got better looks at who could be possibly listed on the two-deep for the Monarchs’ season opener against Jacksonville on Sept. 4th.

During the two-minute drill, the scenario was that the defense was up by two. During the drill, the offense was able to pick up a pair of victories.

Bulldogs Scrimmage on Saturday, Host Annual Meet the Bulldogs

Hundreds of fans lined the field at the Maybank Triplets Practice Facility at Willson Field for the annual “Meet the Bulldogs” on Saturday afternoon.

The Citadel Football team scrimmaged for two hours as fans looked on to get a peak of the Bulldog program as they prepare to open the season in two weeks. The team worked out in humid conditions in the upper-80’s under overcast skies.

The class of 2014 outlined the field and cheered on their fellow Cadets as fans looked on and cheered from nearby bleachers. Refreshments were available and players gathered in McAlister Field House following the scrimmage for an autograph session.

Defense leads the way in Vikings' second scrimmage

The PSU offense generates only two touchdowns in nine possessions

For the second straight weekend, the Portland State defense highlighted the Vikings’ scrimmage as they held the offense to just 291 yards of total offense.

One weekend after stopping the offense on nine of 13 possessions, the defense held the day for much of Saturday’s 90 minute scrimmage with the offense generating only two touchdowns and two field goals on nine series.

The Vikings’ offense did produce some spectacular plays, though, and finished the 61-play scrimmage on a high-note with junior quarterback Connor Kavanaugh leading the first-string players to a touchdown on the final drive.

JSU opens with new digs, high expectations

Jacksonville State has been busy tweaking and fine-tuning in August, like most other college football programs.

The Gamecocks, however, aren’t just prepping a new quarterback or defensive back for the season. The university is putting the finishing touches on an 18-month, $47 million renovation to Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium that pushes the seating capacity to 24,000.

Coach Jack Crowe called it “probably the best on-campus football facility anywhere in FCS football.”

The Colonial Athletic Association is not impressed with the University of Massachusetts football team.

For that matter, CAA preseason voters barely acknowledge good football exists north of Philadelphia.

“But I want us to go out and prove it (wrong).”

Defense Overpowers Offense in Lone Live Scrimmage of Cal Poly's Fall Camp

Last spring, the Cal Poly offense scored four touchdowns in a 59-42 victory over the Mustang defense.

In the only live scrimmage of the 2010 fall camp Saturday afternoon in Alex G. Spanos Stadium, the defense overpowered the offense, allowing no touchdowns.

“The defense played outstanding,” said second-year Cal Poly head coach Tim Walsh. “They played the way they are capable of playing. They flew around.

“The defensive front played at pad level and was outstanding,” Walsh added. “We need to continue to build on that.”
