From the Press Box: Quincy loss was worst-case scenario for ISU football
TERRE HAUTE — There’s no point in sugar-coating Indiana State’s 26-20 fell-from-ahead overtime loss to Quincy on Thursday. It was the worst case scenario for the Sycamore program.
And even if one did want to want to sugar-coat an avoidable defeat, or qualify it with the fact that the Sycamores are extremely young, in the end, it doesn’t matter.
The majority of ISU’s fans don’t want to hear it.
Bucking a Trend: ISU is one of the few football programs to have a black coach and black coordinators
TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State head football coach Trent Miles has a simple philosophy when he hires assistant coaches for his staff.
“I hire the best people possible whether they’re black, green, yellow, white … it doesn’t matter to me,” Miles said.
On ISU’s 2009 staff, the men Miles has hired to be his offensive and defensive coordinators — Troy Walters and Shannon Jackson — are both black. And that makes the ISU football program a rarity among its Division I brethren.
Early opener means less practice time for Indiana State football
TERRE HAUTE — Time waits for no one. So say the Rolling Stones and the same goes for Indiana State’s preseason football schedule.
ISU began practice last Friday, but will only have 21 official practices and 17 practice days under its belt before it plays its season opener against Quincy on Aug. 27. Normally, a team is allotted 29 preseason practices.
The lost week of preseason practice is a by-product of the waiver ISU received to be able to play Quincy before the official Division I start date.
The time crunch has had an effect on how ISU coach Trent Miles has had to approach matters, which is not ideal given that the Sycamores have 62 underclassmen on the roster in their quest to end their 26-game losing streak.
Indiana State football determined in spruced-up digs
Sycamores open practice for 2009 season
TERRE HAUTE — A new field surface, new locker rooms, a badly-needed replacement of the lights at Memorial Stadium … bells and whistles that were long overdue for the Indiana State football program and are important steps for the viability of the program.
But really, all anyone really wants to know is when ISU is finally going to win a game? Least of all, the Sycamores themselves.
ISU began practice for its 2009 season Friday morning, less than three weeks away from its Aug. 27 opening game against Quincy.
TSN: UNI, SIU teams to beat in MVFC
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - There was little doubt that the addition of North Dakota State and South Dakota State would make a brutal Missouri Valley Fall Conference race even more competitive.
But when the dust had settled last season, it was traditional powerhouses Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois sitting on top of the league. Things will likely be just as competitive in 2009, but UNI and SIU are again the teams that should set the pace.
Northern Iowa is looking for a share of its third consecutive MVFC title and has developed into one of the more consistent programs in FCS under coach Mark Farley, going from a top-10 team to a squad capable of winning a national title in almost any given year.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State head football coach Trent Miles announced earlier today (July 8) the addition of football coaching veteran Mike Denbrock to the Sycamore football coaching staff. Denbrock is the program’s Associate Head Coach as well as Special Teams Coordinator. Denbrock will also focus on working with the ISU linebackers on the defensive side of the football.
“It is with great excitement that I announce the addition of Mike Denbrock to the Sycamore football family,” Miles commented. “Mike is a long time friend and an excellent football coach, but an even better person. He is as knowledgeable about the game of football as any coach you will find at any level of the game. He is extremely well respected around the nation. His experience and knowledge will be of great benefit to our program as we continue to move forward.”

ISU football sets its depth chart: Fight for starting QB keys roster battles
TERRE HAUTE — The position battles on Indiana State’s football team will likely rage on for the entire season, but ISU coach Trent Miles gave the first tangible indication of who’s ahead of whom.
ISU was required to release its depth chart on Tuesday. There weren’t many surprises, but then, Miles has said all along his depth chart is a work-in-progress.
Chuck Dowdell is the starter at quarterback, though the fight for the QB spot has become a three-way battle with Terre Haute’s Matt Seliger getting into the mix. Along with freshman Calvin Schmidtke, Seliger is listed as the co-backup. All three quarterbacks took a significant amount of snaps during Tuesday’s practice — the last before ISU departs for Ypsilanti, Mich., today.
“Whoever is back there is going to get the job done,” Seliger said. “Chuck, Calvin and I have all been working hard, we put in the time and we helped each other. We wanted to help whoever got picked to be ready, because all we care about is wins, we don’t care who’s doing it,” Seliger said.
ISU football season preview: Trent Miles era begins Thursday night as ISU heads to Eastern Michigan
TERRE HAUTE — It has only been 26 days since the 2008 Indiana State football team came together under one roof.
Put that in perspective for a moment … the mortgage or rent payment you’ve paid for that period likely covers a longer period of time than the Sycamores have spent together.
The new-look Sycamores haven’t had much time to coalesce and the sand in the hourglass isn’t stopping anytime soon. Ready or not, ISU opens the season at Eastern Michigan on Thursday night, the first game of the Trent Miles era.
“I think we’re prepared. I think they’re eager to hit somebody other than themselves,” Miles said. “We’re fired up as coaches, the players are fired up and eager to get this done.”
Much is at stake as Miles — a Terre Haute native and ISU alum — begins his first season.
ISU football goes into game mode as training camp ends
TERRE HAUTE — ISU’s football team has spent nearly a month learning its playbook, who can and can’t execute, and learning about itself.
During Tuesday night’s scrimmage, ISU finally got a dress rehearsal to put the work into practice.
Game mode replaced practice mode during the scrimmage as ISU went close to four full quarters in its final scrimmage and its final activity of training camp on Tuesday. From now on, ISU will be in preparation mode for next Thursday’s game at Eastern Michigan.
An Open Letter to Dr. Daniel Bradley on Indiana State University Athletics
TERRE HAUTE — Dear Dr. Daniel Bradley,
Welcome to Terre Haute! And I mean, welcome to Terre Haute. The presence of the university president in the city the university calls home is a welcome site indeed for ISU students, faculty, administrators and alumni.
ISU football morphing from preseason to game prep
TERRE HAUTE — Ready or not, Indiana State’s football attention will turn later this week from season preparation to game preparation for the Aug. 28 opener at Eastern Michigan.
With only a scant few training camp practices to go, are the Sycamores where coach Trent Miles wanted them to be at this point?
“It’s never where I want to be,” said Miles with a laugh before turning serious. “You have to keep in mind we have 40-something newcomers who have never played Division I football. They’ve never even been on the bus. Are we where we want to be? No. Not even close, but we’re making the strides to get there. The attitude? Yes. But overall execution? Not yet.”
Senior linebacker Jayden Everett is about to finish his fourth collegiate training camp and he likes what he’s seen thus far.
