Colonels Can’t Slow Down Governors as Peay Upsets EKU
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — Led by a pair of undersized, but extremely-talented backs, the Governors had little trouble racking up yards on the ground against the Ohio Valley Conference’s top run defense.
Terrance Holt and Ryan White combined to rush for 275 yards as Austin Peay pulled off a stunning upset of Eastern Kentucky University Saturday at Governors Stadium. The Colonels turned the ball over four times, including twice in the fourth quarter, as Austin Peay (3-4, 2-2 OVC) held on for a historic 24-20 win.
The Governors had not beaten the Colonels (4-3, 4-2) since 1977, a streak of 22 games.

Colonel fans helped determine the All-Century Team by casting their votes on-line in late August and early September at www.EKUSports.com .
EKU’s Upset Bid Falls Just Short At Indiana, 19-13
Eastern Kentucky University quarterback T.J. Pryor’s desperation pass to Orlandus Harris fell incomplete in the end zone as time expired, allowing host Indiana to escape with a 19-13 victory Thursday night at Memorial Stadium. This was the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Pressure cooker in the OVC
With arguably the best team in the conference not eligible for the league title, the nine-team Ohio Valley Conference could see some serious competition in 2009.
Eastern Kentucky Tabbed as 2009 OVC Favorite, Preseason OVC Team Named

With Economy Slumping, Colleges Cut Teams to Save Money
After three decades of steady growth in the number of teams and student-athletes, colleges and universities large and small, private and public, east and west, are slashing millions of dollars from their sports budgets.
Colleges have dismissed athletic staff, reduced hours for pools and practice courts, and increased equipment and facility fees. Some have also cut the size of their travel squads, eliminated trips requiring air travel and done away with housing teams in hotels the night before home games.
EKU Football Will Have New Playing Surface in Fall
Out of the nine football teams in the Ohio Valley Conference, seven have a turf other than natural grass. That number will soon be eight, because when the Colonels kick off their 2009 season, it will be on a newly installed synthetic turf.
On March 13, Hanger Field in Roy Kidd Stadium began preparations for the installation of synthetic turf. At this time, Vescio Sports Fields, the winning bidder on the project, is surveying the current field, finding out where utility lines are and how deep they are, said Assistant Athletic Director for Operations Dan McBride.

Central Hardin's Logsdon Signs with Eastern Kentucky
CECILIA —Walking into Central Hardin High School to witness his son signing a national letter of intent to play football at Eastern Kentucky University on Wednesday evening, Larry Logsdon recalled his first trip to the school four years ago.
The Logsdon family had moved to Hardin County prior to Seth Logsdon’s freshman year and Larry took his son for an orientation to the school. Seth saw a booth for football and he asked his father if he could play.
“I think he was more scared to ask me than anything,” Larry said. “I was never allowed to play, so I think he was scared. I really wanted him to play. I think I was more scared about it than he was. I had a flashback walking in here today. Four years flew by. I never dreamed it would lead to this.”
EKU's Landholm joins Hope’s Staff at Purdue
RICHMOND — Danny Hope has added another former Eastern Kentucky University assistant to his coaching staff.
Last week, the first-year Purdue coach announced the hiring of Donn Landholm as the team’s defensive coordinator. Landholm had spent the past 12 seasons at EKU, serving as linebackers coach (1997-2004), defensive coordinator (2004-07) and recruiting coordinator (2008).

UR’s Vaughan, Gray and Ward Shine for Spiders over EKU
The University of Richmond’s Shawn White, a reserve fullback from Atlee High, fielded a short kickoff to start the second half. Both arms covered the ball as the 245-pound White freight-trained ahead 31 yards until several Eastern Kentucky players finally rode him down.
That raw effort seemed to flip the Spiders’ switch yesterday.
Tied at 10 with Eastern Kentucky at halftime, Richmond won 38-10 in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs before 2,994 at UR Stadium. White’s return, to EKU’s 34, set up a quick Spiders touchdown. UR led 31-10 after four snaps in the fourth quarter.
Sideline Similarity for EKU and Richmond
Head coaches at University of Richmond Stadium on Saturday can relate.
Mike London, 48, came to Richmond in January from the University of Virginia, where he was defensive coordinator. Dean Hood, 45, came to Eastern Kentucky in January from Wake Forest University, where he was defensive coordinator.
“I know him, know his body of work. He’s a good coach, a good man,” London said of Hood.
Skyhawks’ OVC Demise Self-Inflicted
UT Martin’s hopes for a second Ohio Valley Conference championship in three seasons came down to the final play against Eastern Kentucky.
In actuality, the Skyhawks’ fate — and chance at a Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth — was decided long beforehand.
Five first-half turnovers put UTM behind the eight-ball, and Brandon Gathof blocked Tom Hansen’s 45-yard field goal on the last play of the game to secure the Colonels’ 33-31 victory Saturday at Graham Stadium.
Colonels Draw a Familiar Foe in Playoffs
RICHMOND — Payback will be on the minds of the Eastern Kentucky Colonels when they visit the University of Richmond in the first round of the NCAA playoffs Saturday.
Fresh from winning the Ohio Valley Conference title and an automatic bid to the Football Championship Subdivision post-season, the Colonels will try to atone for a 31-14 road loss last year.
“I hope the second time is better,” said EKU quarterback Allan Holland, who was already banged up and left last year’s game with a shoulder injury in the first half. “I’m a lot more healthy going to Richmond.
UT Martin, Eastern Kentucky Square Off for OVC Title
It’s come down to this in the Ohio Valley Conference.
The winner of Saturday’s showdown between No. 16 UT Martin (8-3, 6-1 OVC) and Eastern Kentucky (7-3, 6-1 OVC) at high noon in Martin will decide who will claim the OVC Championship, and receive the automatic FCS playoff berth.
The loser joins a muddled list of two-loss conference teams who are all vying for a shot at an at-large playoff berth. None of that is a concern to 2006 OVC co-champion UT Martin.
