Spoo, EIU Staff Find Ways to Beat the OVC Power
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – In this time of the year when some struggling football teams start blaming people, Eastern Illinois had its finger pointing Saturday.
All of it was praise following the Panthers’ finest hours in years, Saturday’s 28-20 upset win over a Jacksonville State team that had been looking nearly invincible in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Credit started at the top.
“I will tell you our head coach did a great job this week, not that he doesn’t every week,” defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni said. “But he had some ideas, he brought them to the staff and we used them. I don’t know if we outcoached them but our head coach did a great job even though he won’t want take the credit.”
Eastern Illinois Wins -- Again -- on Jacksonville State's Turf
The Eastern Illinois Panthers were not ready to let Jacksonville State claim the people’s Ohio Valley Conference championship, so they came to Paul Snow Stadium and beat the Gamecocks 28-20.
Saturday’s win spoiled JSU’s homecoming and ruined the APR-banned squad’s goal of going undefeated against fellow I-AA teams. Before Saturday, the 4-3 Gamecocks had lost only to No. 11 Georgia Tech and Florida State and had won four straight.
Pressure cooker in the OVC
With arguably the best team in the conference not eligible for the league title, the nine-team Ohio Valley Conference could see some serious competition in 2009.
Backup Plan: JSU to Give More Snaps to 2nd QB Ivory
JACKSONVILLE — Ryan Perrilloux commanded so much attention with his arrival in Jacksonville State football program last year it was hard to think there were other quarterbacks on the Gamecocks’ roster.
The older No. 11 is back for his final year of eligibility with even higher expectations — for himself and the team, despite its circumstances — which begs the question heading into training camp: What are the Gamecocks to do if they didn’t have the Payton Award candidate?
Eastern Kentucky Tabbed as 2009 OVC Favorite, Preseason OVC Team Named
In a balanced vote that saw five of the eight eligible teams receive at least one first-place vote, two-time defending champion Eastern Kentucky University has been picked as the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference preseason football favorite in a vote of league head coaches and sports information directors.
OVC and SportsUnlimited to Launch Ohio Valley Conference Football 2009 Magazine
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference has announced the launch of production of “Ohio Valley Conference Football 2009″ a full-color, limited edition football magazine that previews the 2009 football season. The venture with SportsUnlimited will be available in late August but is now available for pre-order. Detailed feature articles on all nine OVC teams will be included in the publication.
Nichols among those added to Payton Award watch list
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Record-setting Eastern Washington quarterback Matt Nichols is one of four players added to the updated watch list for the Walter Payton Award, bestowed annually upon the top player in FCS.
This marks the second straight year that Nichols, who has piled up 9,376 yards of total offense in his previous three seasons, was named to the preseason watch list for the honor.
Also added were Massachusetts running back Tony Nelson, McNeese State running back Todd Pendland and Jacksonville State quarterback Ryan Perrilloux.
Postseason Ban Upheld For Jacksonville State
Jacksonville State University’s final appeal of a postseason ban for its football team based on the team’s historic academic performance has been denied. The ban will be in place for the 2009 season.
Jacksonville State Files Appeal for APR Penalties
Jacksonville State has formally filed its appeal of an NCAA committee’s decision to uphold a 2009 postseason ban on the Gamecocks’ football program, a university official confirmed Tuesday.
JSU attorney Randy Woodrow told The Star the law firm working with the school on its appeal — Bond, Schoeneck and King of Overland Park, Kan. — filed the paperwork with the NCAA earlier in the day.
Woodrow declined to describe the substance of the appeal, citing a gag order placed on the university by the NCAA when it went before the Committee on Academic Performance on March 27.
NCAA Upholds Playoff Ban for Jacksonville State
JACKSONVILLE — The Jacksonville State football program inched closer to being ineligible for postseason play in 2009 when the NCAA last week denied its waiver for the ban, the college sports governing body confirmed Tuesday.
The Division I Committee on Academic Performance has upheld the postseason ban against the Gamecocks for not meeting academic standards (APR) for a third year in a row, but has given the program relief in other areas, sources familiar with the case have told The Star.
With Economy Slumping, Colleges Cut Teams to Save Money
After three decades of steady growth in the number of teams and student-athletes, colleges and universities large and small, private and public, east and west, are slashing millions of dollars from their sports budgets.
Colleges have dismissed athletic staff, reduced hours for pools and practice courts, and increased equipment and facility fees. Some have also cut the size of their travel squads, eliminated trips requiring air travel and done away with housing teams in hotels the night before home games.
Jacksonville State releases '09 schedule
A pair of games against teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and an seven-game Ohio Valley Conference schedule highlights Jacksonville State’s 2009 Football schedule, as announced by JSU Athletics Director Oval Jaynes on Thursday.
Titan, Panther Ink with JSU
Gadsden City’s David Maness and Collinsville’s Robert Gray signed National Letters of Intent with Jacksonville State University as part of a class Gamecocks head coach Jack Crowe calls “the best he has ever signed.”
“We’re very excited about the class we’ve signed,” Crowe said at a luncheon Wednesday. “We feel like we’ve met all our needs for next season and the years to follow with this talented group of recruits.”
Gadsden City head coach Joe Billingsley said Maness has “an unlimited future” ahead with the Gamecocks.
Gamecocks Hope to Grow into New Stadium, Match Marching Southerners
JACKSONVILLE — There has been a long-running commentary among Jacksonville State University students and fans about the football team needing to play as well as the band.
The school’s head football coach, Jack Crowe, said last week that he often challenges his players, in a joking manner, to be as good as the band. He pointed out that when the team goes to play at Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and other places the band always gets a standing ovation.
Commentary: Why Did NCAA Slight Tribe?
And you thought the griping and hyperventilating about college football’s postseason was confined to the Bowl Championship Series. Think again.
In the warm glow of the Colonial Athletic Association again hoarding half of the at-large berths in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, William and Mary sits outside on a park bench.
The rub, from the Tribe perspective, isn’t necessarily that its team went unselected. Teams that finish 7-4 stay home every year come playoff time.
What fries their bacon is that conference rival Maine took the 16th and final spot, leaving CAA commissioner Tom Yeager with an intramural snipefest in the midst of an embarrassment of riches.
UT Martin, Eastern Kentucky Square Off for OVC Title
It’s come down to this in the Ohio Valley Conference.
The winner of Saturday’s showdown between No. 16 UT Martin (8-3, 6-1 OVC) and Eastern Kentucky (7-3, 6-1 OVC) at high noon in Martin will decide who will claim the OVC Championship, and receive the automatic FCS playoff berth.
The loser joins a muddled list of two-loss conference teams who are all vying for a shot at an at-large playoff berth. None of that is a concern to 2006 OVC co-champion UT Martin.
Jacksonville State Rides its Standout QB to Rout of SEMO
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Southeast Missouri State upset Jacksonville State at home in last season’s final game, giving the Redhawks hope they could duplicate that feat on the road.
But this is a much different JSU squad, thanks in large part to the addition of Ryan Perrilloux.
Perrilloux, a junior quarterback, was the MVP of last year’s Southeastern Conference title game while playing for national champion LSU.
Time to Play Big Boys: Jax State's Schedule Ramps Up with E. Illinois
JACKSONVILLE – There’s no way of getting around it. If Jacksonville State wants to get back to Chattanooga, Tenn., this year, it has to get past Eastern Illinois this week.
The Gamecocks open their Ohio Valley Conference schedule Saturday, and for the fourth time in their six years in the league, it’s with a game that will go a long way toward deciding their fate.
This time, for the first time, it’s against nationally ranked Eastern Illinois. It’s two of the top three teams in the closest preseason vote in league history in what is arguably the league’s strongest group of teams in the past six years.
Georgia Tech Too Much for Jax State in Perrilloux Debut
ATLANTA - The introduction of Paul Johnson’s triple-option offense to Georgia Tech went much better than the re-introduction of Ryan Perrilloux to college football at Jacksonville State.
Tech’s flexbone offense split more seams in the JSU defense than a beluga whale in a bikini as the Yellow Jackets hammered Jax State 41-14 on Thursday night at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Johnson’s sleight-of-hand attack piled up 349 yards and six touchdowns on the ground in the season-opener for both teams.
Perrilloux, his well-documented dismissal from LSU and transfer to Division I- AA in May behind him, produced 203 yards of total offense, but he was intercepted twice and lost a fumble in front of 45,706 fans - the second- largest crowd to watch a JSU game.
OVC Plays Tough Non-Conference Schedule
Loss of Samford gives teams open slot for extra game.
Eastern replaced the opening in its 2008 schedule with another game against a Football Bowl Subdivision team.
The Panthers had that opportunity because Samford left the Ohio Valley Conference following the 2007 season to join the Southern Conference. Eastern also cut down on 115 miles of travel.
Eastern will travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to play Central Michigan in its first of four non-conference games before starting Ohio Valley Conference play.
