UNH Football Notebook: CAA Expansion Won't Affect 'Cats Short-Term
DURHAM — There are numbers CAA commissioner Tom Yeager has a pleasure trying to crunch, and others that present more of a challenge.
Start with the tough ones. Two years from now, the CAA will welcome its 13th football-playing member, Old Dominion, which will be lodged in the league’s South Division and unbalance an unbalanced league schedule even more.
In 2012, Georgia State will bring the membership to 14, and play as a nominal member of the North Division, but with a specially-crafted schedule.
Monday night football coming to Lamar campus
BEAUMONT - Monday night football - Lamar University style - will hit campus under the lights and with all of the other normal trimmings at the Lamar Soccer Complex on Nov. 9.
Coach Ray Woodard and his staff will put their 65-man squad of scholarship players and walkons through a game-like scrimmage that will conclude the Cardinals’ fall workouts in preparation for their fulltime return to football during the 2010 season. The scrimmage, which will be open to the public free of charge, will begin at 7 p.m.
UTSA names Shane Elder as Director of Football Operations
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head football coach Larry Coker announced Tuesday that he has hired Shane Elder as Director of Football Operations.
Elder’s appointment is effective immediately and he will be responsible for coordinating team travel, on-campus recruiting visits, the walk-on program and housing and meal programs for student-athletes, assisting with summer camps, overseeing the program’s compliance paperwork, scheduling and organizing community service outings and serving as the NFL and high school coaches liaison.
Lamar's Woodard to enter Kilgore College Hall of Fame
After enrolling as a freshman student at Kilgore College in the fall of 1979, Ray Woodard decided to take a stab at football as a walkon candidate during spring training.
It was a decision that paid huge dividends for the then gangly 220-pounder who had played in the offensive and defensive lines at Corrigan-Camden High School. Not only did Woodard make the Kilgore team in the fall of 1980, he earned second team Junior College All-America honors as a defensive tackle, and he was an honorable mention selection as a sophomore.
Lamar dedicates Coach Vernon Glass Field of Champions
While a student at Lamar University in the mid-1970s, Bart Simmons learned many things that helped him move on to a successful career in business - one that has seen him become owner of five Dallas area companies.
All that Simmons learned at Lamar, however, did not come in the classroom. Much of his knowledge was picked up on the football field where he received valuable inspiration from Cardinal head coach Vernon Glass.
Update from Georgia State Football Practice
ATLANTA—Georgia State head football coach Bill Curry likened the first two weeks of practice for his Panther football team to training camp.
“In two weeks, we’ve had 10 really tough practices, so it’s almost like these guys have been through a training camp,” said Curry after Thursday’s workout. “We didn’t anticipate that with classes starting, but going in the mornings has allowed us to get in some really good work.”
Walkon Tryouts To Initiate Lamar's Fall Football Program
Lamar University will kick off its fall football program with a walkon tryout session scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday on the practice field adjacent to the south parking lot of Provost Umphrey Stadium.
The Cardinals’ 34 scholarship players will join invited walkons for a light workout in helmets and shorts later that afternoon, and the team’s first full-padded practice will be at 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31.

USA Football to Face Three Fellow Start-Up Programs in Future
MOBILE, Ala. - The University of South Alabama football team will be able to test itself on numerous occasions against three other schools that are just starting their program with Friday’s announcement of future opponents.
The Jaguars will play home-and-home series against Georgia State, Lamar and Texas-San Antonio over the next three seasons, with two of those contracts set to begin in 2010.
Lamar to Play Six Home Games in 2010 Football Season
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University completed its football schedule for 2010 Friday with the addition of Panhandle State as the Cardinals’ 11th opponent for the school’s first season of competition since 1989.
“We are certainly happy to finalize our schedule for what we believe will be a truly exciting season for our students and the entire community,” said Billy Tubbs, Lamar’s director of athletics. “We are particularly happy to have six home games and only five on the road.”
Jags Run Mini-Scrimmage in First Full-Pad Practice
MOBILE, Ala. - If the reality of college football at the University of South Alabama hadn’t set in yet, it has now. The Jaguars held their first fall practice in full pads Saturday morning, and after nearly an hour of drills, the offense and defense squared off for a full-contact mini-scrimmage.
“We’ll buffer it from day to day, but it just makes you better,” head coach Joey Jones said of the scrimmage. “Any time you’re going against good competition it makes you better. You’ve got to balance that with getting somebody hurt, so it’s always a fine line in coaching where you’re trying to figure out how hard to work them and not go too far and get somebody hurt. We’re just going to judge that from day to day. We have a plan of what we’re going to do, but we’ve got to be smart enough to adjust if things start happening.”
Higgenbotham Transfers from 'Bama to USA Football Program
MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama football team has added another transfer from an NCAA Division I-A/Football Bowl Subdivision institution. Jaguar head coach Joey Jones announced Wednesday that Charlie Higgenbotham has enrolled in school and will be eligible to participate immediately.
He comes to USA after spending the last three years at Alabama, and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Berry, a teammate of Panther head coach Bill Curry with the Baltimore Colts, shared expertise and experience from his playing career as one of the top receivers in NFL history and from his long coaching career, which was highlighted by a trip to the Super Bowl as head coach of the New England Patriots.

Georgia State Panthers Partner with NFL YET
ATLANTA—The Georgia State football program has entered into a partnership with the National Football League Youth Education Town to utilize the Atlanta NFL/YET facility as a temporary practice site this fall.

Former Memphis Running Back Transfers to South Alabama
MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama head football coach Joey Jones announced Wednesday that Brandon Ross has signed scholarship papers and will enroll in school beginning with the fall semester.
A transfer from Memphis, whose cousin Richard will be a redshirt freshman running back for the Jaguars this year, Ross will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Kaplan Named Director of FB Operations at Georgia State
ATLANTA—Dave Kaplan, formerly executive director and tournament director for the Atlanta Classic Foundation, Inc., has been named Georgia State’s director of football operations, head coach Bill Curry announced.
Kaplan directed and managed Atlanta’s former PGA Tour event, most recently known as the AT&T Classic, from 1983 through 2008.
Former NFL Player Perry Joins Georgia State Staff
ATLANTA—Former National Football League player Todd Perry has been added to the Georgia State football coaching staff as tackles and tight ends coach, head coach Bill Curry announced.
Perry played for Curry at Kentucky before an 11-year career as an NFL offensive lineman with the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins.
Lamar Football Adds Iowa Transfer Coleman
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar head football coach Ray Woodard has announced that former Beaumont West Brook standout Jacody Coleman has transferred to Lamar and will be a member of the school’s football program beginning this fall.
Coleman spent the last two seasons at the University of Iowa where he appeared in 22 games with three career starts as a middle linebacker. He made 52 totals tackles – including 15 solos – and collected six for loss. He made a career-high six at Penn State in 2007 as a true freshman.
