Mountaineers rule: Elon comes apart early as App State claims league title

floatedrightELON — Stepping onto what was billed as one of the biggest stages in Southern Conference football history became a deflating experience for Elon University.

Appalachian State’s reign reached five consecutive league titles by virtue of a precisely administered 27-10 beating of Elon in Saturday’s showdown of unbeaten conference powers at jam-packed Rhodes Stadium.

Amid an electric atmosphere that bubbled with a championship feel, the visiting Mountaineers (8-2 overall, 7-0 Southern Conference) bolted to a 21-0 lead during the game’s opening 15-plus minutes and cruised to the league’s automatic berth in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Mission men: Elon's objectives drive path toward football showdown

floatedrightELON — Having endured a ghastly Halloween afternoon during which Elon University barged in and clobbered his football team on its own home field, Wofford coach Mike Ayers was direct in his assessment.

“They came in on a mission,” he said of Elon that day. “There’s no doubt about that.”

Just like that, and completely unaware, Ayers invoked a certain growing catchphrase that has gained substantial circulation among the Phoenix, which meets Appalachian State on Saturday with the Southern Conference championship hanging in the balance.

Elon indeed is on a mission.

Coaching Consistency the Secret of Wofford's Success

floatedleftThey can hardly believe it’s been so long, but Wofford’s head football coach and his top assistants have been working together for nearly two decades.

“I don’t see how we can make it through another year,” defensive coordinator Nate Woody said. “By now, we’re just sick of each other.”

The secret that has allowed the smallest football-playing school in Division I to reach perennial status in the national FCS rankings lies partly in the longevity and loyalty of the coaching staff.

Head coach Mike Ayers kicks off his 22nd season with a 7 p.m. game Saturday in Tampa, Fla., against South Florida. Woody has been at Wofford for 19 years, offensive coordinator Wade Lang for 22. They both played for the Terriers as well.

App State's Jerry Moore Says Edwards Not Healed from Accident

Coach Jerry Moore of Appalachian State said yesterday that there are still a few more days for quarterback Armanti Edwards’ right foot to heal from a cut that has sidelined him all preseason, but that he doubts Edwards will play in Saturday’s season-opening game at East Carolina.

“I don’t think there’s much likelihood, being very honest,” Moore said. “It’s not like we’re trying to play cat-and-mouse games or anything like that. If he could play, we’d play him.

“We’ve never been much here on surprise starters and stuff like that. If Armanti could play, we’d play him. But I doubt very, very seriously if he could play. We’re not going to put him out there, we’re not going to put any player out there, that’s not a lot closer to 100 percent than what he is right now.”
