Mountaineers rule: Elon comes apart early as App State claims league title
ELON — Stepping onto what was billed as one of the biggest stages in Southern Conference football history became a deflating experience for Elon University.
Appalachian State’s reign reached five consecutive league titles by virtue of a precisely administered 27-10 beating of Elon in Saturday’s showdown of unbeaten conference powers at jam-packed Rhodes Stadium.
Amid an electric atmosphere that bubbled with a championship feel, the visiting Mountaineers (8-2 overall, 7-0 Southern Conference) bolted to a 21-0 lead during the game’s opening 15-plus minutes and cruised to the league’s automatic berth in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
Mission men: Elon's objectives drive path toward football showdown
ELON — Having endured a ghastly Halloween afternoon during which Elon University barged in and clobbered his football team on its own home field, Wofford coach Mike Ayers was direct in his assessment.
“They came in on a mission,” he said of Elon that day. “There’s no doubt about that.”
Just like that, and completely unaware, Ayers invoked a certain growing catchphrase that has gained substantial circulation among the Phoenix, which meets Appalachian State on Saturday with the Southern Conference championship hanging in the balance.
Elon indeed is on a mission.

App State's Jerry Moore Says Edwards Not Healed from Accident
Coach Jerry Moore of Appalachian State said yesterday that there are still a few more days for quarterback Armanti Edwards’ right foot to heal from a cut that has sidelined him all preseason, but that he doubts Edwards will play in Saturday’s season-opening game at East Carolina.
“I don’t think there’s much likelihood, being very honest,” Moore said. “It’s not like we’re trying to play cat-and-mouse games or anything like that. If he could play, we’d play him.
“We’ve never been much here on surprise starters and stuff like that. If Armanti could play, we’d play him. But I doubt very, very seriously if he could play. We’re not going to put him out there, we’re not going to put any player out there, that’s not a lot closer to 100 percent than what he is right now.”
Presley to Start for App State Against ECU
Appalachian State University head coach Jerry Moore announced after Wednesday’s practice that sophomore DeAndre Presley (Tampa, Fla./Middleton) will start at quarterback for the Mountaineers on Saturday when they open the 2009 season at East Carolina. Moore said he does not expect All-American Armanti Edwards (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood), who injured his right foot in a lawn-mowing accident exactly four weeks ago, to play in the season opener.

App Opens Camp
Appalachian State University football began preparations for the 2009 season in earnest on Friday afternoon when the Mountaineers opened fall camp with a two-hour-and-forty-five-minute practice at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Per NCAA regulations, the Apps wore helmets but no pads and there was no contact in the year’s first practice. However, everything else looked much like it would in mid-season, as the pace mimicked that of a game week rather than the first full-team workout since the spring practice season wrapped up in March.
Edwards Injured in Accident, Will Miss 2-4 Weeks
BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University All-America quarterback Armanti Edwards will be sidelined for 2-4 weeks of practice after sustaining a foot injury in an accident at his off-campus residence on Wednesday afternoon.
Edwards was mowing the lawn at his residence when his right foot was injured by the lawnmower. Roommate and teammate Brian Quick transported the 2008 Walter Payton Award winner to Watauga Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

BOONE, N.C. — Traditional NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) powers Appalachian State, Montana and McNeese State have entered into a six-game agreement that will have Appalachian host Montana in 2012 and travel to face the Griz in Missoula, Mont. in 2013, the three schools announced on Thursday.
ASU’s previously announced home-and-home series with McNeese State has been moved back one year as part of the arrangement, with games now scheduled for 2014 in Lake Charles, La. and 2015 in Boone. Montana and McNeese will square off in 2016 and ‘17 to round out the six contests.
FBS foes vital for SoCon team budgets
The nonconference portion of a Football Championship Subdivision team’s schedule is like a land of opportunity. It can provide riches or reward — ideally both.
In the case of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and its Southern Conference colleagues, each 11-game schedule in 2009 features eight SoCon games and three slots they can fill as they please. Seven of the nine teams will each play one guarantee game against a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent, and Furman and Wofford will play two such “money” games.
Appalachian's Moore just having fun
By the time Appalachian State’s caravan arrives in Greenville to open the football season on Sept. 5 against East Carolina, Jerry Moore will have turned 70.
The Mountaineers’ coach doesn’t look his age and certainly doesn’t act it.
Upon entering the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame in a class of six that otherwise included only Tar Heel natives last week, Moore wanted the ceremonies to move at pace often associated with his team’s quick-strike offensive attack.
