Jerry Glanville quits as Portland State football coach

Jerry Glanville is out as Portland State football coach, and the Vikings hope to have his successor in place by the first week of December.
In making the announcement Tuesday, athletic director Torre Chisholm didn’t discuss to what extent, if any, Glanville’s resignation was forced. He also didn’t identify prospective candidates by name, but said he wants someone with extensive college coaching experience who can “bring us success and a sense of excitement to the community.”
The move ended the university’s three-year effort to remake its once-proud program with a flashy former NFL coach who ended up having more cachet off the field than his teams had impact on it. It also came three days after the conclusion of the Vikings’ worst season (2-9, 1-7 Big Sky Conference) since 1982, and closed a 9-24 Glanville era.
Big Sky Issues Suspension To Northern Arizona Player
The Big Sky Conference has suspended Northern Arizona football player Matt Estrada for an illegal hit in last Saturday’s game against Weber State, the league announced Wednesday.
Estrada, a junior safety from LaHabra, Calif., will serve a one-game suspension this Saturday when Northern Arizona plays host to Eastern Washington.

EWU's Matt Nichols Nears Big Sky Conference Record as Milestones Accumulate
Passing the likes of Dave Dickenson, Doug Nussmeier, John Friesz and eventually Jamie Martin, the senior quarterback needs only 303 yards to break the total offense record for the 46-year-old league.
Only a bye this week for the Eastern Washington University football team has slowed the accumulation of milestones for senior quarterback Matt Nichols.
Born to Run: Reynolds, Griz Steamroll No. 14 Wildcats
Big showdown? Big runaway. The second-ranked Montana Grizzlies took command of the Big Sky Conference football race Saturday, with a dominant 31-10 win over Weber State forged with turnovers and two-tight end sets.
Another record crowd filled Washington-Grizzly Stadium thinking the game could go down to the wire; instead, the Wildcats got little going on offense, threw the ball up for grabs and saw the Grizzlies’ Chase Reynolds run for 193 of his career-best 241 yards after halftime.
By the end - after Andrew Swink came down with the fourth interception thrown by Weber State’s Cameron Higgins - the Griz were up two games in the loss column on every other Big Sky team.
Big Sky Suspends Sacramento State Football Player
OGDEN, UTAH (Oct. 28, 2009) - The Big Sky Conference announced it has suspended Sacramento State football player Avery White for his actions in last Saturday’s game against The University of Montana.
White, a freshman linebacker from Manteca, Calif., will be suspended for Sacramento State’s Oct. 31 home game against Northern Arizona.
Appeals panel overturns postseason ban for Eastern Washington football
The NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Committee has overturned a postseason ban for Eastern Washington University’s football program, saying that the competitive advantage the school gained through the violations was not as significant as the Committee on Infractions had claimed.
The February 2009 case involved violations of impermissible participation by ineligible student-athletes in practice activities, the use of too many countable coaches, failure to monitor by the former head coach, and a lack of institutional control and failure to monitor by the university.
Griz Trickery Surprises Sac State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gerald Kemp is a redshirt freshman quarterback who has made only one pass - an interception - for the Montana Grizzlies, though he’s shown himself to be a dangerous runner.
On Saturday, in Montana’s 45-30 Big Sky Conference football win over Sacramento State, it was his sticky hands and not his arm or legs that boosted the Griz.
Kemp had a Marc Mariani-like leaping grab of Brody McKnight’s onside kick to set up the Grizzlies’ go-ahead TD.
Big Sky Statement Regarding Officiating in EWU-UM Football Game
OGDEN, UTAH (Oct. 20, 2009) - Following a review of the Eastern Washington-University of Montana Big Sky Conference football game, the league has issued a statement in regards to the contest’s quality of officiating.
Big Sky Suspends Eastern Washington Player for Illegal Hit
OGDEN, UTAH (Oct. 14, 2009) - The Big Sky Conference has suspended Eastern Washington football player Kyle Wilkins for an illegal hit in last Saturday’s game against Weber State, the league announced Wednesday.
Wilkins, a senior linebacker from Monroe, Wash., will serve a one-game suspension this Saturday when Eastern Washington plays at Montana.

Montana's Ongoing Competition
MISSOULA - From Miles City to Libby, whenever supporters wearing maroon and silver have gathered at coffee houses and sports bars to discuss matters pertaining to University of Montana football this spring and summer, one topic invariably rises to the forefront of the conversation.
Who will line up under center for the Grizzlies during the 2009 season?
Will it be Billings West product Andrew Selle or University of Oregon transfer Justin Roper?
Fully confident: With a year under his belt, Bryan Waggener is ready to lead
When University of Northern Colorado quarterback Bryan Waggener strolls into the huddle these days, there is an air of confidence about him that his teammates can’t help but notice.
The man they all call “Wags” has a swagger this season that has his teammates and coaches firmly believing he will lead the Bears past the difficult 1-10 season of a year ago and bring them to new heights this season.
“He just has a lot of confidence in himself and his ability,” UNC wide receiver Brandon Smith said. “He thinks he can make every throw and every read and that is what you want in a quarterback, to be confident. To know how to do it how to get it done.”
Even Waggener himself agrees he is more confident and comfortable with his teammates and the Bears offense than a year ago when he transferred from the University of Florida, where he sat fourth on the depth chart and played behind Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow.
Portland State football: Jerry Glanville said he's ready to play the Beavers tomorrow; school presidents make bet
With the season opener against Oregon State in Corvallis less than a week away, Portland State coach Jerry Glanville came off the practice field Saturday morning with one question: Why wait?
Glanville isn’t suggesting that his team is ready to pull off what would qualify as a huge upset when the Vikings face the Beavers in next Saturday’s 11:35 a.m. game at Reser Stadium, although he might be thinking that.
It’s just that the Vikings’ third-year coach seems convinced that his team has accomplished almost everything it had set out to do through the first three weeks of pre-season camp, and he said his team isn’t likely to get significantly better or worse in the five practices remaining before Saturday.
The only thing left to do now is play the game.
Meet the 2009 Grizzlies
A year ago Montana Grizzlies coach Bobby Hauck had a young team that was scrambling to replace 24 seniors.
The result was a 14-2 record and an appearance in the Division I Football Championship. The Grizzlies lost to Richmond in the title game, but along the way found gems like running back Chase Reynolds and receiver Marc Mariani, linebacker Alex Shaw and cornerback Trumaine Johnson.
Now as the Griz wind up their third week of fall camp, they take stock of a team that is a year older and - well, still young.
