UNH Football Notebook: CAA Expansion Won't Affect 'Cats Short-Term

floatedleftDURHAM — There are numbers CAA commissioner Tom Yeager has a pleasure trying to crunch, and others that present more of a challenge.

Start with the tough ones. Two years from now, the CAA will welcome its 13th football-playing member, Old Dominion, which will be lodged in the league’s South Division and unbalance an unbalanced league schedule even more.

In 2012, Georgia State will bring the membership to 14, and play as a nominal member of the North Division, but with a specially-crafted schedule.

Dukes Demolished by Tribe

With a no. 5 national ranking and a top-rated defense, William and Mary was determined to end its five-game losing streak to James Madison.

A sellout crowd on Homecoming at Zable Stadium was ready as well.

After a quiet first half, the Tribe quickly raced to a commanding three-possession lead, defeating JMU 24-3 to move its record to 6-1 and 3-1 in the CAA.

It was the College’s first win over the Dukes (2-5, 0-4 CAA) since a 2004 victory in Harrisonburg.

Opinion: Additonal FB Expansion Could be Coming Soon to CAA

The Colonial Athletic Association will swell to 14 football schools in 2012, when Georgia State joins.

Too many? Too few? Or just right?

Rather than fret about growing too big too fast, maybe the league will say what the heck and just super-size it.

If it does, there are two schools that would be a geographic fit for the league - surely more of a fit than Georgia State. Adding them would be cost effective at a time when schools everywhere are looking to save wherever they can.

JMU Speedster Expects To Be OK By Fall

HARRISONBURG - Speedy Scotty McGee will have to stay off his feet much of the offseason. The senior kick returner for the James Madison football team underwent surgery on his left foot Monday, the same procedure he had on his right foot after the 2006 season.

“I didn’t think I would have to have it,” McGee said Friday from his parents’ Virginia Beach home, where he is recovering. “It was one of those things where it started to flare up during spring ball.”

CAA Eyes Odd Slate

HARRISONBURG - Currently, not every football team in the Colonial Athletic Association plays every other member. In 2011 - for one season only - a school might not even face everyone in its own division.

Old Dominion will become the seventh team in the CAA’s South Division in 2011, while the North will remain at six teams. CAA commissioner Tom Yeager said Wednesday that four of the South teams will play all six divisional foes, while three will play only five.

FCS Playoffs Netted Profit for JMU

JMU QB? Battle Begins Next Week

HARRISONBURG - Just over a week before the start of spring practice, James Madison’s two quarterback candidates seemed loose and relaxed Tuesday afternoon as they went through conditioning drills at Bridgeforth Stadium.

Junior Drew Dudzik, who played the second half of the Dukes’ Division I-AA semifinal loss to Montana last season, will compete with redshirt freshman Justin Thorpe for the starting job, a battle that coach Mickey Matthews says likely won’t be decided until the fall.

CAA Will Remain One Conference

There are still logistics to be worked out as the Colonial Athletic Association football conference prepares to expand to 14 teams, but Commissioner Tom Yeager said the league will stay together.

But Yeager said the league’s athletic directors agreed that remaining together was best for all involved.

The Colonial already has 12 football members, including the University of Richmond, William and Mary and James Madison. Opinion: Griz Play like Road Warriors Against No. 1 Dukes

The Shenandoah Valley invokes history book images of Robert E. Lee or the battle of New Market.

On Friday this hallowed ground was home to a different kind of skirmish. It’ll never make the history books, but Montana football fans will be talking about it for a while.

This was the night the Griz staged their own kind of uprising on the home turf of the No. 1 team in the nation, James Madison.
