Liberty Jumps in Front Early, Goes on to Bury Presbyterian

floatedrightIt was an odd scene Saturday evening. As Liberty finished a 55-19 thrashing of winless Presbyterian, avenging the loss from last season that cost the Flames a berth in the FCS playoffs, the crowd at Williams Stadium looked much like the one that shows up Friday nights for LCA games.

With 2:55 left in the second quarter, SirChauncey Holloway bounded in from four yards out to put the Flames up 28-3. A light drizzle began to fall, and the stadium emptied. Announced attendance was 14,197. But by the time the second half started, there were maybe 1,000 folks left in the stands.

“I turned to Todd (Wetmore, Liberty’s director of athletic communications), and said, ‘it’s a mass exodus,’” Liberty coach Danny Rocco said. “I don’t know if it was that it had started to pour, but I was a little taken aback by that.”

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Eight months might have passed when the Big South Conference gathered for its annual football media event on the final day of July, but the coaches of this fledgling Football Championship Subdivision league were still bristling about how its 2008 champion, Liberty had been left out of the playoffs.

Furman Takes on Big Task against Delaware

COLUMBIA, S.C. – When Furman coach Bobby Lamb says his Paladins have a big task in front of them Saturday against Delaware, he means it literally.

Lamb noted two things about the Blue Hens – they are one of the biggest teams he has ever seen and they are winners – capturing the Football Championship Subdivision title in 2003 and losing in the title game last year.

“They’re big and they’re strong and they’re physical and they do what they do,” Lamb said. “They’re not fancy.”

Bentley brings Blue Hose to visit Terriers for 1st time since Gibbs Stadium opened.

“We went our way, they went their way,” Wofford coach Mike Ayers said. “And it’s worked out to where we are able to play each other again.”

And it doesn’t even matter that Mr. Shankley, an Englishman, was referring to what we Americans call soccer.

Just in time for the 2008 season, the excitement, drama, history and fun of American football will explode into the South Carolina State Museum’s 401 Gallery Aug. 1 when the Museum opens the exciting new exhibit Mud, Sweat and Cheers: Palmetto State Football, 1889-2000.
