CHICAGO, ILL. – Three-time national champion Appalachian State and runner-up Delaware dominated the selections of the College Sporting News Fabulous Fifty FCS All-American team released today with six major award winners.

In all, 37 teams and 13 conferences are represented on the team. Appalachian State landed four players on the squad, Delaware had three, while nine other teams also had multiple selections — Eastern Washington, Elon, James Madison, Montana, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Prairie View A&M, Richmond and San Diego.

Unlike other All-American teams, the CSN honor’s squad is designed to be like a real team, capable of taking the field and competing in a game. It includes everything from quarterbacks, who can run or pass and often-overlooked fullbacks, to long snappers and other special teams performers. The Fabulous Fifty also emphasizes players who have exhibited character and other team-oriented traits, not just lofty statistics, or talent.

Henry Frazier III, who led Prairie View A&M to its first winning season in over three decades and most wins since 1964, was named as the coach of the year. Now in his 4th year at PVAMU, Frazier has turned around a Panther program that at one point had lost an NCAA record 80-plus games.

Beginning the season 4-2 for the first time since 1966, Frazier then led the Panthers over eventual Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Jackson State to ensure the first PVAMU winning season since 1976. Prairie View finished 2007 with a 7-3 record and a second place finish in the SWAC’s Western Division. For his efforts, Frazier received a contract extension that will keep him on “The Hill” thru 2012.

Walter Payton award winner Jayson Foster, quarterback from Georgia Southern was named as CSN’s offensive player of the year. Giving opposing defenses fits all year long, Foster rushed for an NCAA all-divisions quarterback record of 1,844 yards and led his Eagles to within a couple points of a Southern Conference championship and into the playoffs. In addition quarterback, Foster lined up as wide receiver, kick returner and holder. He completed 109-of-170 passes for 1,203 yards and six touchdowns and did not throw an interception over the final six games. Foster was selected to the team in 2006 as a return specialist.

Named to his third consecutive CSN All-American team, Appalachian State safety Corey Lynch was honored as CSN’s defensive player of the year for 2007. Beginning with a blocked kick versus Michigan that has become one of the most watched plays in FCS history, Lynch finishes his career with 52 pass breakups, capturing the NCAA Division I record for career passes defended. A dedicated ball hawk (31 takeaways including 24 interceptions), Lynch is ASU’s first three-time All-American since two-time Buchanan Award winner Dexter Coakley (1994-96).

Appalachian State standout offensive guard Kerry Brown was named as CSN’s offensive lineman of the year. Brown helped pave the way for a Mountaineer offense that ranked among the nation’s top 10 in scoring, total offense, rushing and pass efficiency. Brown is another repeat recipient of CSN honors being named to the team in 2006 as well.

Quarterback Armanti Edwards of Appalachian State garnered the playoff most valuable player nod for his astounding performances while leading the Mountaineers to their historic third straight crown. Edwards accounted for 727 yards on 50 of 70 passing and eight touchdowns to go with his eight rushing touchdowns and 660 yards on the ground. All without a turnover. His seven touchdowns against Richmond in the semi-finals (four rushing and three passing) and 495 yards of total offense set many records. Most notably, his 313 rushing yards in the game set a new NCAA Division I record for most rushing yards by a quarterback.

Freshman of the year honors went to Elon quarterback Scott Riddle. Riddle established new Elon and SoCon single-season milestones for completions, passing attempts, passing yards, touchdown passes, plays of total offense, yards of total offense and touchdowns responsible for. He also ended up with NCAA freshman records for touchdown passes, total offense average and yards of total offense. Riddle led the nation in total passing yards, passing yards per game and completions per game while ranking third in both total offense and points responsible for.

Ten players were repeat selections on the team, including four-time recipient Ricky Santos of New Hampshire; three-time picks Lynch and Furman’s Jerome Felton; and repeaters Ramses Barden of Cal Poly, Josh Johnson of San Diego, Foster, Brown, Edwards, Brennan Carvalho of Portland State and Bryan Smith of McNeese State.
