AAFL Draft Features 47 FCS Alumni
The All-American Football League, a for-profit, professional football league, held their inaugural draft on Saturday, January 26th. In that draft were 47 alumni of schools who played Football Championship Subdivision football (formerly known as I-AA football).
Headlining the draft class was the No. 4 overall pick, quarterback Eric Kresser (Marshall) who played on the Thundering Herd’s I-AA national-championship team in 1996 and was a teammate of Randy Moss, who is playing in the Super Bowl this weekend for the New England Patriots. Overall, Tennessee State boasted the most FCS draftees with six selections, followed by Western Illinois with four.
Other notable FCS alumni include runningback Rod “He Hate Me” Smart from Western Kentucky, linebacker (and former firefighter) Todd Delamielleure from Hofstra, and a member of Delaware’s 2003 I-AA national championship team in linebacker Mondoe Davis.

Teams in the AAFL will initially operate as divisions of League whose football operations will be run by a quasi-independent board and General Manager. Some of the League’s teams will be hosted by universities with FBS football programs and other teams will play in independent venues. Games will be scheduled in the spring and early summer.
League teams will employ only those players who have both completed their college football eligibility and earned a four-year degree. This policy is expected to have a very positive impact on universities’ NCAA Graduation Success Rate and their Academic Progress Rate. To the extent practical, graduates of host universities will play for the team hosted by their alma mater.
Currently there are six teams in the AAFL, consisting of: Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Tennessee, and Texas.
