Grant's Broadous chooses Cal Poly over Portland State's offer
Grant senior Andre Broadous, The Oregonian Class 6A offensive player of the year at quarterback and a first-team all-state defensive back, has orally committed to Cal Poly.
The 6-foot, 190-pound Broadous, who passed and rushed for 79 touchdowns and 6,000 yards as a junior and senior, chose Cal Poly over an offer from Portland State.
...
“I really liked the players and the coaches, the way they connect,” Broadous said. “They’re letting me play quarterback, and they’re letting me play baseball, too. I like the campus a lot, and the college town.”
Wednesday is the first day football recruits can sign letters of intent. College coaches can’t comment on recruits until they receive a letter of intent.
The Mustangs of San Luis Obispo, who run a spread option offense, finished 7-4 last season and led the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) in yards per game. Broadous plans to redshirt next season and study quarterback Jonathan Dally, who was No. 2 in the nation in passing efficiency as a junior.
Broadous was recruited to Cal Poly by Ian Shields, the team’s new offensive coordinator. Shields played quarterback at Oregon City High School and Oregon State and was head coach at Eastern Oregon.
“He told me from the get-go that he wanted me to play quarterback,” Broadous said. “He kind of reminded me of (Grant coach Diallo Lewis). He’s a players coach.”
Broadous also received an offer from Portland State to play quarterback.
“The whole Portland State thing was up in the air because I never talked to them,” said James Broadous, Andre’s father. “I didn’t know how serious they were. It just seems to me like if they were serious, they would try to communicate a little bit more.”
Andre also scheduled to visit Oregon State. But the visit never materialized after cornerbacks coach Nigel Burton left to become defensive coordinator at Nevada, James Broadous said.
