UVU AD: Football next big step for Utah Valley
Utah Valley University’s progression from a trade school of about 3,000 students to a Division I university was further reinforced by the announcement UVU will join the Great West Conference and start competing in all varsity sports except football in the 2009-2010 season.
The Great West Conference, which had been a football-only conference in the past, will be made up of Houston Baptist University, New Jersey Institution of Technology, University of North Dakota, University of South Dakota and the University of Texas-Pan American.
“This is a special day for Wolverine athletics,” UVU director of athletics Michael Jacobsen said. “This will make the university greater. It’ll make it all come together like pieces in a puzzle.”
Being associated with a conference will, in some ways, give the school a sense of identity and a bigger goal to work toward.
When Jacobsen came to work at the school 24 years ago, his vision for the school didn’t involve university status with Division I sports.
But, now that he sees what is possible, he says that UVU would be able to accomplish another big goal - adding football.
