THE CITADEL: Bulldogs complete Day 4
CHARLESTON -– The Citadel football team was back in action for day four of fall camp on Thursday morning at the Maybank Triplets practice field.
The three-hour workout concluded with no reported injuries. The Bulldogs worked through several scenarios in the three-hour morning workout that kicked off 8 a.m.
According to Bulldog Head Coach Kevin Higgins, the players worked hard on understanding their assignments and had great concentration throughout the practice.
“We worked several team periods. We worked a second and long scenario, trying to get our guys accustomed to the change and getting positive yards,” Higgins added. “We also worked on extending the run segment. We must improve on our perimeter blocking.”
The Bulldogs will return to the Maybank Triplets practice field in full pads on Friday at 8 a.m. for another 3-hour workout. They will have their first two-a-day on Saturday at 8 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., followed by the annual Media Day on Sunday at Johnson Hagood Stadium at 1 p.m.
FURMAN: Freshmen CBs gain notice
GREENVILLE — In Furman’s first day of work in shoulder pads, a couple of Paladin freshman cornerbacks gained the notice of head coach Bobby Lamb.
“Jordan Griffin and Ryan Steed both looked good,” said Lamb following Thursday afternoon’s practice session that was interrupted for approximately 45 minutes due to lightning. “They have size and have shown some solid ability at corner.”
Griffin, a 5-foot-10, 165-pound product from Fairburn, Ga. and Steed, a 5-foot-11, 177-pound Mt. Pleasant native, could battle to secure slots on Furman’s travel squad this fall.
Thursday’s practice in shells (shoulder pads, helmets, and shorts) was “more enthusiastic” and characterized by “a little more popping,” despite the weather delay according to Lamb.
The bad weather forced the Paladins to scratch planned work on special teams, but the squad continued the installation of its offensive and defensive systems and also covered red zone offense and defense.
“Right now their heads are swimming a bit with all that we’ve covered, but that’s to be expected.”
Also earning Lamb’s praise on Thursday were the team’s top three tight ends, including All-Southern Conference performer Larry Hedden, as well as Chris Truss and Seth Skogen.
Hedden, a consensus first team all-SoCon pick, caught 36 passes for 421 yards and three touchdowns in 2007. Truss, meanwhile, started the first three games and grabbed 13 passes for 122 yards and two scores a year ago before before being forced to the sideline due to injury. Skogen is a redshirt freshman.
“I really like our tight ends and how they caught the ball today. They give some real weapons in our offense.”
Furman’s Friday practice is set for 2:45 p.m.
