Stonehill College Edged by Iona in OT
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — It was a Gael force that the Stonehill College football team could not stop on Saturday afternoon.
Stonehill jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead, but Iona College rallied for a 35-34 win in overtime.
It was the second straight win for Iona, a Div. 1-AA program, over a Northeast-10 Conference team as the Gaels rallied with 24 fourth-quarter points to defeat Pace, 30-26.
Iona quarterback Nick Rossetti sparked the comeback as he was 26-for-39 and threw four touchdowns passes, including a 22-yarder to Jeffrey Miller in the overtime. Robert Woods kicked the point after for the win.
The biggest touchdown for Iona came in the third period. Desmond Hines returned a missed field goal 80 yards for a touchdown.
Stonehill quarterback Cruz Parsons had a big day in the air as he passed for 312 yards and two touchdowns. He was 23-for-40 and had a pass intercepted.
Parsons had both of his touchdown passes in the first period. He threw a 30-yard pass to Eddie Vachon and a 12-yard pass to Jon Kaloyanides for scores.
David Pringle was the prime receiver for Stonehill as he caught 10 passes for 101 yards.
Jeff Payne, who rushed for 68 yards on 17 carries, scored two second-half touchdowns for Stonehill. His second touchdown was a 3-yard run in overtime, but the Skyhawks missed the point-after kick.
