“We want to grow we would like to have more students here at the University of West Florida,” says Dr. Debbie Ford, Vice President for Student Affairs at UWF. The university boasts 10,600 students this year - the highest enrollment ever for the university. Ford says a fan base is key to a successful football program “With a strong athletic program we want to make sure we have good community and fan support, ” says Ford. Even students realize the importance of the two co-existing. “I would go just to watch the games but you have to think of the economic costs to start up a program and to develop it at a school like this is huge,” says UWF student John Lang.
University officials confirm they are in the process of studying the feasibility of a football program at UWF. “It’s football in it’s infancy.” Unlike a new football program at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, UWF may not be able to count on new student fees to get the program started. Right now Florida law imposes a cap on student fees at state universities, which could rule out the option of higher fees to pay for a football program.
