Patriot League Announces Football Academic Honor Roll
A record 131 student-athletes, including 2008 Patriot League Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year Ryan McGuire of Holy Cross, were named to the Patriot League Football Academic Honor Roll on Thursday.
...
McGuire has compiled a 3.42 grade point average as an Economics major at Holy Cross. He was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for the second year in a row. McGuire earns his third nomination to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll after also receiving his second consecutive First-Team All-League nod at tight end in 2008.
Lafayette junior Chris Cosgrove made the honor roll with a 4.0 grade point average in the fall semester for the second consecutive year. A Beaver Falls, Pa., native, Cosgrove is a Biology major at Lafayette.
McGuire is one of 14 student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll that also earned All-League honors for their play this season. The other First-Team All-League picks to make the Academic Honor Roll are: Colgate senior English major Jordan Scott and senior Sociology & Anthropology major Chris Ekpo, Lafayette senior Chemistry major Joe Russo and junior Engineering major Mark Leggiero, Holy Cross senior Economics major Matt Partain and Lehigh senior Social Psychology major Quadir Carter.
The mark of 131 honorees eclipses the previous high of 124 on the Football Academic Honor Roll last season. Georgetown led all schools with 32 student-athletes named to the Honor Roll, while Bucknell had 22, Fordham notched 20, Holy Cross recorded 19 and Lafayette had 18.
To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the fall semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the Patriot League’s seven fall championship sports. The criteria for awarding varsity letters are different at each institution.
“Today’s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow’s Leaders” – The Patriot League continually demonstrates that student-athletes can excel at both academics and athletics without sacrificing its high standards. The Patriot League’s athletic success is achieved while its member institutions remain committed to its founding principle of admitting and graduating student-athletes that are academically representative of their class. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education.
