Gardner-Webb University Announces Completed 2009 Schedule
Gardner-Webb announced its 11-game, 2009 football schedule Thursday, which will feature five home games.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs will open at home against Division II Mars Hill on Saturday, September 5 (6:00), and will also play home games against Charleston Southern (Oct. 17), Southern Virginia (Oct. 24), Stony Brook (Oct. 31) and Liberty (Nov. 14).
GWU will be opening a season in Spangler Stadium for the first time since 2005.
The squad’s road slate is one of its toughest yet, with games at Division I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) members NC State (Sept. 19) and Buffalo (Oct. 10) on tap. GWU will also do battle at in-state foe Western Carolina (Sept. 12) and hit the road for Big South dates at VMI (Oct. 3), Coastal Carolina (Nov. 7) and Presbyterian (Nov. 21).
Gardner-Webb, which went 5-6 last season, will have an open date on Sept. 26 between the games at NC State and VMI.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs welcome back 19 starters on offense and defense from last year’s team – including 10 on the defensive side of the football. GWU could also see the return of 2008 preseason Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year and two-time All-America linebacker Mario Brown – who is awaiting word on a medical redshirt from last season.
