Offense, Defense Each Show Positives in First MSU Bobcats Scrimmage
Rob Ash saw positive signs on both sides of the ball during his team’s first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday, a controlled session that covered nearly 100 plays in Bobcat Stadium.
“Our defense is pretty good,” Ash said after his that unit forced three turnovers and harassed MSU quarterbacks throughout the day. “I’m happy with that. They’re quick, fast, they made plays today. Jody Owens pulled the ball away one time, (Jeff) Price made an interception… A lot of guys played hard and played well.”
Aaron Mason spearheaded a ground game that was effective at times. The senior carried 10 times for 126 yards and a touchdown that came on a 70-yard dash after Mason kept his balance and popped up on a play that appeared dead. CJ Palmer rushed 14 times for 50 yards, while Ricky Evans added 35 yards on eight carries.
“I thought we ran the ball decently at times,” Ash said. “I thought the running backs played hard, the quarterbacks were playing decently well. We threw the ball around, had some good plays.”
Mark Iddins completed nine of his 15 passes for 75 yards, while Cody Kempt was 5-for-9 for 28 yards with an interception. Tight ends Joe Schreibeis and Kyle Begger caught two balls each, while a pair of true freshmen receivers had outstanding days. Everett Gilbert caught three passes for eight yards, while Tanner Bleskin caught five for 90 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown.
Ash said protection of Bobcat quarterbacks needs to improve in the coming days. “Early we were pretty sharp,” Ash said. “I think it was more of a protection issue today. When we had a pocket and were able to throw I thought our quarterbacks did a pretty good job.”
Bobcat players get their first off day of camp on Sunday before returning Monday to face the first two-a-day practice of fall camp.
