Fourteen Former Southland Players Named on NFL Rosters
FRISCO, Texas - When the National Football League kicks off this weekend, a total of 14 former Southland Conference players appear on league rosters. Nine players have found roster spots in the AFC, leaving five others on NFC rosters.
McNeese State and Northwestern State each have three former players in the NFL this season. Former McNeese State fullback Luke Lawton is in his third season with the Oakland Raiders. Other former Cowboys include wide receiver Quentin Lawrence, who is in his second season with the Kansas City Chiefs, and defensive end Bryan Smith, who is in his second season with the St. Louis Rams.
All three former Demons play for the Buffalo Bills. Terrence McGee is in his seventh season as a cornerback. Offensive tackle Demetrius Bell is in his second season, while wide receiver Felton Huggins is in his first season after earning a spot on the practice squad.
Central Arkansas, Nicholls and Sam Houston State each placed two former players on NFL rosters in 2009. Former Central Arkansas defensive end Jacob Ford enters his third season with the Tennessee Titans, while former Bears’ tight end Marquez Branson marks his first NFL season on the practice squad for the Denver Broncos. From Nicholls, Kareem Moore begins his second season as a safety with the Washington Redskins and cornerback Lardarius Webb, a third-round selection in the 2009 draft, earned as spot on the Baltimore Ravens roster.
Sam Houston State is represented in the NFL by a pair of quarterbacks. Now in his eighth season in the NFL, Josh McCown enters the season as the backup for the Carolina Panthers. After being selected in the fifth round of this year’s draft, Rhett Bomar will lead the practice squad for the New York Giants.
Former Texas State defensive tackle Fred Evans starts his fourth season for the Minnesota Vikings while former Stephen F. Austin wide receiver Dominique Edison, a sixth-round pick in the 2009 draft, earned a spot on the practice squad for the Tennessee Titans.
