Appalachian (8-2, 7-0 SoCon) has already secured a spot in the 16-team field by virtue of clinching no less than a share of its fifth-straight Southern Conference title with a 27-10 victory last Saturday at Elon. The opponent and location for ASU’s first-round game, as well as the road it must navigate to win a fourth national championship in five years, will be unveiled during the selection announcement.
Head coach Jerry Moore and members of his team will be on hand for the viewing party, as well as ASU cheerleaders and representatives from the University Bookstore, who will be selling exclusive Mountaineer gear.
ASU TO HONOR SENIORS PRIOR TO SATURDAY’S GAME: ASU football will honor its 13 seniors prior to Saturday’s regular-season finale. The senior class of OL Mario Acitelli, DL Malcolm Bennett, OL Zach Brown, QB Armanti Edwards, DL Daniel Finnerty, TE Tim Frye, DB Cortez Gilbert, RB Josh Jackson, DL Justin Johnson, P/LS Adam Kassouf, LB Jacque Roman, WR Tavaris Washington and DL Anthony Williams has led the Mountaineers to a 46-8 overall record heading into their final regular-season game at The Rock and joins last year’s crop of seniors as the only classes in school history to win four SoCon championships.
HILLARY UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL SURGERY: Junior wide receiver CoCo Hillary (Edgefield, S.C./Strom Thurmond) underwent successful surgery on Monday to repair a right knee injury suffered during a non-contact practice drill on Nov. 3. His recovery time is expected to be 5-7 months, which puts him on track to be at 100 percent in plenty of time for the open of ASU’s 2010 fall camp next August.
EDWARDS LISTED AS DAY-TO-DAY: Quarterback Armanti Edwards (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood), who sustained a right knee injury in the first half of last Saturday’s win at Elon, is officially listed as day-to-day by ASU’s medical staff.
Edwards sustained the injury on Appalachian’s final possession of the first half but returned to complete 9-of-9 passes for 114 yards after halftime.
During his weekly media teleconference on Tuesday morning, head coach Jerry Moore said that “everything looks pretty good right now” with regards to Edwards’ status for Saturday’s game versus Western Carolina.
