Rivals.com ranks Appalachian State’s class as the best in the Football Championship Subdivision, with the Spiders checking in a close second. Perennial national powers, the Spiders and Mountaineers each own 35-8 (.814) records over the last three seasons, which is the second-best winning percentage in the FCS in that span behind Montana (39-4, .906).
First-year head coach Latrell Scott, who was named to the position in December, announced his class Wednesday that included three local standouts, eight from the Commonwealth of Virginia, two each from the high-school hotbeds of Texas, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, and one each from California, Michigan, Maryland and New Jersey.
Included in the Spiders’ incoming class, but not part of the Rivals.com rankings, is redshirt sophomore QB Aaron Corp, who transferred to the Spiders after two seasons at Southern California. Corp is immediately eligible to play at Richmond and has two years remaining.
The top-five FCS incoming classes were: App. State (44 pts.), Richmond (38), South Carolina State (30), Northwestern State (26) and Western Carolina (20).
