After a week off, Coastal Carolina will kick off its Big South Conference slate on the road at Presbyterian, Sat., Oct. 16. The League home opener is the following week, as Stony Brook comes to Brooks Stadium, Sat., Oct. 23. A two-game road swing is next for the Chants, as they head to Gardner-Webb, Sat., Oct. 30, and VMI, Nov. 6, for key league matchups. The regular season then wraps up with back-to-back home games against three-time defending champion Liberty, Sat., Nov. 13, and in-state rival Charleston Southern, Sat., Nov. 20.
Following that, the NCAA Division I Football Championship will begin on Sat., Nov. 27, with the winner of the Big South Conference earning an automatic berth into the newly expanded field of 20. the league’s first automatic bid. It will also mark the second in league history a Big South team will be in the playoffs, as Coastal Carolina earned the conference’s only previous bid as an at-large team in 2006.
“We are very excited about the 2010 season.” Head Coach David Bennett said. “The year is already off to a great start for the Coastal Carolina Athletic Department, with men’s basketball having had their best season ever and baseball off to a great start. That gives us an even greater energy as we prepare for our 2010 season.
“The schedule is a going to be tough as always, starting with a great challenge against a team the caliber of West Virginia,” Bennett continued. “I have a lot of respect for Bill Stewart, as I have known him quite a while, and they have built a solid program there in Morgantown. Playing quality non-conference FCS teams like Towson, Georgia Southern, Delaware State and 2008 National Champion Richmond will be great tests for our program. Then we will get into Big South play, where Liberty has invested quite a bit to get to the top and it shows. Stony Brook made a great surge also to the top of the league with its hard-nosed brand of football. Gardner-Webb, VMI, Charleston Southern and Presbyterian all will bring their best every week, so we know it will be a fight for every win. We are real excited about this schedule and looking forward to 2010 season.”
