Delaware State Announces 2010 Schedule
Hornets Have 5 Home Games
An appearance in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge and five home games highlight the 2010 Delaware State University football schedule, announced today by Director of Athletics Derek Carter.
The 11-game slate kicks off with a battle against Southern University of Baton Rouge, La., in the Sixth Annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge on Sunday, Sep. 5 in Orlando, Florida.
The contest at Orlando’s Citrus Bowl Stadium will be televised on an ESPN network, which will be announced, along with the kick off time, at a later date.

“This is a great opportunity for our university to participate in an outstanding event,” said Carter. “I’m sure the experience will be cherished by our student-athletes, alumni and fans for years to come. We invite the entire DSU family to join us in Orlando for the game and other event activities.”
The will be Delaware State’s first appearance in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge, which features a top team from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference against a member of Southwestern Athletic Conference. Southern will be making its second appearance in the challenge. The Jaguars defeated the MEAC’s Florida A&M 33-27 in 2007 in Birmingham, Ala.
Delaware State is 2-0 all-time vs. Southern. The Hornets, led by first-year head coach Bill Collick and All-America wide receiver John Taylor, defeated the Jaguars 46-8 in 1985 in Baton Rouge, La. The teams met again the following year in Shreveport, La., with the Hornets coming out of top, 21-14.
DSU will play its 2010 home and MEAC opener on Sep. 11 against Florida A&M University. The Rattlers snapped a four-game losing streak to the Hornets last season in Tallahassee, Fla. Delaware State won the last game between the teams in Alumni Stadium, 35-28 in overtime, in 2008.
After an open week, the Hornets will travel to Conway, S.C., to take on the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina University on Sep. 25. This will be the third contest between the teams. Delaware State won the last meeting, 23-18, in 2007.
The following Saturday (Oct. 2), the Hornets will welcome MEAC rival Hampton University to Alumni Stadium. The Pirates will be seeking revenge after a 21-6 Delaware State victory in Hampton, Va., in 2009.
The next weekend (Oct. 9), the Hornets will battle Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Delaware State holds a 19-15 lead in the series, although the Wildcats used a fourth quarter rally to stun the Hornets at Alumni Stadium last season. DSU has won its last two games at BCU’s Municipal Stadium.
On October 16, Delaware State will celebrate homecoming against North Carolina A&T State University at Alumni Stadium. The Hornets and Aggies have met 38 times over the years, with DSU holding a 19-18-1 lead.
Delaware State will visit Morgan State University in Baltimore on Oct. 23. The Hornets have won four of the last five meetings between the teams, including a 35-22 victory in Dover, Del., last season.
Defending MEAC champ South Carolina State University will visit Alumni Stadium on Oct. 30 to begin a two-game homestand for the Hornets. The Bulldogs have won the last two league titles, and 19 straight MEAC games entering the 2010 season.
Delaware State will close out the 2010 home schedule against North Carolina Central University on Nov. 6. The teams will be meeting for the first time since 2004. The Eagles have won the last four meetings between the teams, and hold a 13-5 lead in the series.
The Hornets will be on the road for the last two games of the 2010 season, beginning with a visit to Norfolk State University on Nov. 13. The Spartans snapped a six-game losing streak in the series on a last-minute scoring drive at DSU’s Alumni Stadium in 2009. The Hornets lead the all-time series 13-4.
Delaware State will wrap up the 2010 regular season at Howard University in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 20. The Hornets have won the last three meetings between the teams, and hold a 35-30-1 lead in the series.
Kick off times for all DSU games will be announced later. The complete Hornet football schedule is also listed at www.DSUHornets.com.
