Gardner-Webb Adds Defensive Line Coach Shawn Howe To Staff
Howe comes to Boiling Springs with a tremendous amount of experience at the Division I level.
Gardner-Webb University football added Shawn Howe to its staff, with Howe taking over as the program’s defensive line coach.
Howe joins the Gardner-Webb staff after spending three seasons at the University of Memphis. In 2009, he tutored the Tigers’ tight ends and spent the previous two seasons working with the Memphis defense.

The Dallas, Ore., native spent the 2006 season as a volunteer assistant at NC State prior to his time at Memphis – working with the Wolfpack in the areas of game-plan development, scouting report preparation, film breakdown and assisting with the defensive line.
Howe played collegiately at Rocky Mountain (Mont.) College, starting at defensive end for two seasons. He also played defensive end and linebacker at College of the Redwoods on the junior college level in California, earning first-team All-Mid Empire Conference honors and team Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2000.
He graduated from Rocky Mountain in 2004 with a degree in physical education and health. Howe remained at his alma mater early in his coaching career, gaining valuable experience on the defensive side of the football and as a regional recruiter until 2006.
Howe inherits a Gardner-Webb defensive line that returns two key starters – nose guard Nelson Rushing and bandit/end Jordan Woods – from the 2009 season, along with 2009 Big South Freshman of the Year Matt Goods.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs are in their first week of spring practice, with the annual GWU Spring Game scheduled for April 17 in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium.
