Cowboys receive championship rings
McNeese State’s Cowboys recently received their Southland Conference championship football rings for the 2009 season.
It’s the third time in the past four years for the Cowboys to win the league title.
McNeese has now won the SLC football crown a total of 13 times, taking the championship in 2009, 2007, 2006, 2003, 2002, 2001, 1997, 1995, 1993, 1991, 1980, 1979 and 1976.
Former McNeese president Jack Doland was head coach when the team won the 1976 title while Ernie Duplechin coached the team that won the 1979 and 1980 crowns.
Bobby Keasler was the head coach for titles in 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1997 while Tommy Tate coached the championship teams of 2001, 2002 and 2003.
Current head coach Matt Viator has coached the Cowboys to their last three titles.
The 2009 team posted a 9-3 won-lost record. A total of 66 players earned letters on that team and 51 of them are returning for the 2010 season.
The Cowboys are currently going through spring football drills. They have their first scrimmage scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m.
