Texas A&M football player transfers to Lamar after assault charges
Former Texas A&M football player Adren Dorsey will transfer to Lamar University and join the football team, Lamar coach Ray Woodard said Sunday night.
Dorsey, a 6-foot-2, 305-pound defensive lineman, leaves A&M after head coach Mike Sherman suspended him following an April arrest for family-violence assault charges, according to the Brazos County justice Web site.
Police arrested Dorsey after a physical altercation with an ex-girlfriend outside the student recreation center April 13. He is scheduled for arraignment June 24, according to the Brazos County justice Web site.
Dorsey, 20, visited the Lamar campus with his father, former Lamar football player Floyd Dorsey, over the weekend.
“We got a good feel for him,” Woodard said. “We visited with some people at A&M and felt like it was time to move on and it is an opportunity to start over. He’s a great addition for us.”
According to a police report cited in Hearst newspaper records, both Dorsey and the ex-girlfriend said she started the physical contact by pushing his head to the side. Dorsey’s ex-girlfriend said he then put his hands around her neck and threw her to the ground.
Dorsey also was arrested for not having a driver’s license and liability insurance.
“Anytime there’s anything like that, we will take it on an individual basis and research it as best we can,” Woodard said. “Ultimately it’s a judgment call if it warrants giving the young man another chance or not. It’s a case-by-case thing.”
At A&M, Dorsey competed for playing time during spring practices last month. He played three games in 2009 as a redshirt freshman. Dorsey played high school football at Tyler John Tyler.
Dorsey will be the fifth player from a bowl division school to transfer to Lamar for the 2010 season. Lamar will play its first game in nearly 21 years Sept. 4 against McNeese State, in Lake Charles, La.
