Elon's Campbell Signs Pro Deal With Baltimore Mariners
Former Elon University defensive lineman Andre Campbell has signed a contract to play professionally with the Baltimore Mariners of the American Indoor Football Association.
Campbell, who delivered a standout senior season at Elon in 2009, will suit up for the Baltimore team’s final two regular-season games on Saturday and June 26.
The Mariners have clinched the Eastern Conference title and a first-round bye in the AIFA playoffs with a 12-0 record. Their opening game in the playoffs is scheduled for July 10.
Campbell, a defensive end, became a first-team All-Southern Conference selection in 2009. He led the league with 16 tackles for lost yardage and ranked second in the conference with 8½ quarterback sacks.
He started all 12 games for Elon last year and helped the school to its first-ever appearance in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
Campbell is the third Elon senior from the 2009 team to join a professional football team.
Cameron McGlenn, a safety at Elon, recently signed on to became a member of the Fayetteville Guard, which also competes in the AIFA.
After being passed by in April’s NFL Draft, Elon receiver Terrell Hudgins signed a rookie free-agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys.
