Whether you're a Jack or Coyote, teams' football success unites S.D.
South Dakota’s two largest universities and their Division I athletic programs have earned the state’s congratulations this fall.
The University of South Dakota recently defeated Big 10 Conference opponent University of Minnesota on the football field. Last weekend, South Dakota State held its ground in a showdown with powerhouse Nebraska.
For a state unaccustomed to the sports limelight, the attention these games have attracted feels great.
First, it demonstrates that for all of the pitfalls present in top-level collegiate sports, there also are some clear benefits. And while the jumps by USD and SDSU to Division I were met with anxiety and concern at some levels, the recent games indicate they might have been just the right moves after all.
The players for USD and SDSU are displaying their talents to out-of-staters in ways that many might not have seen before. And these student-athletes are exhibiting a never-say-die attitude that serves to unite all South Dakotans.
Whether you support one or the other in athletic contests, it’s hard to disagree that these athletes’ noteworthy performances reflect on the entire state and how we feel about ourselves.
