Furman head football coach Bruce Fowler announced today the hiring of four assistant coaches.

The four include assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach Tim Sorrells, wide receivers coach Tony Elliott, defensive coordinator John Windham, and defensive assistant Mark Moehring.

Sorrells and Elliott were retained from the previous staff while Windham comes to Furman from Gardner-Webb, and Moehring from Vanderbilt.

Sorrells recently completed his 25th season as an assistant coach at his alma mater. The Greeneville, Tenn., native helped lead Furman to a pair of Southern Conference championships in 1980 & ‘81 and twice earned All-SoCon honors as a quarterback. Following graduation in 1981 with a degree in physical education, he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1982 under Dick Sheridan. Following a three-year tenure in the high school ranks, he returned to Furman in 1986 and has since served in a number of capacities, including running backs and quarterbacks coach, as well as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

Elliott joined the Furman program in 2008 as wide receivers coach. The James Island, S.C., native was a four-year letterman as a wide receiver at Clemson (2000-03), where he majored in industrial engineering and earned the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Weaver-James-Corrigan Post Graduate Scholarship. He worked two years for Michelin-North America before accepting his first coaching assignment as wide receivers coach at South Carolina State in 2006.

An 18-year collegiate coaching veteran, Windham spent the last four seasons as defensive coordinator at Gardner-Webb, where he twice helped the Bulldogs pace the Big South Conference in rushing defense and total defense. The Gallatin, Tenn., native and 1986 graduate of Vanderbilt with a degree in exercise science began his career as defensive ends coach at Livingston (Ala.) in 1987 and later spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Mississippi State (1988-89), assisting with the offensive line. He served as defensive coordinator at Colorado College (1990-95) before being named head coach at Sewanee in 1996, where he remained for 11 seasons before going to Gardner-Webb.

Moehring served the last three seasons as a defensive graduate assistant under Fowler at Vanderbilt. The Minnetonka, Minn., product lettered in football, wrestling, and track in high school before first joining the Commodore football program as a manager and volunteer in the video department. He earned a degree in engineering science and economics and was recently awarded a master’s in education from Vanderbilt’s Peabody College.

Fowler was named Furman’s new head coach on Dec. 13. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native and 1981 Furman graduate spent 16 seasons as an assistant coach at his alma prior to joining the staff at Vanderbilt in 2002, where he served in the capacities of defensive coordinator, as well as assistant head coach and linebackers coach under Bobby Johnson.
