Davidson Announces 2011 Captains
Davidson football coach Tripp Merritt announced today that senior defensive back Peter Kidwell, senior defensive back Malcolm Moses-Hampton, senior offensive lineman Alex Fleming, senior linebacker Gianni Ricci and sophomore quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff have been named captains of the 2011 team. The captains were selected in a vote by the student-athletes and coaching staff.
“We opened up the ballot process to all the classes, and I think we came up with a really great group of captains with good balance on each side of the ball,” said Merritt.
Kidwell was a second-team All-PFL selection in 2010 and All-PFL Honorable Mention in 2009. He recorded 68 tackles, six tackles for loss, two interceptions, five pass breakups and a blocked kick last season. He was fourth in the league in tackles by a defensive back.
Moses-Hampton was fifth on the team in tackles a season ago with 49 stops and an integral member of the special teams units. He recorded 5.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and forced two fumbles in 11 games.
Fleming started all nine games he played in last season. He has seen action in 17 career contests, making 14 starts.
Ricci saw action in six games in 2010 and recorded three tackles. He has played in 27 career games and collected 34 tackles, two tackles for loss, an interception and a forced fumble.
Carkhuff, the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Davidson since Beaux Jones in 2004, was named the Pioneer Football League Offensive Freshman of the Year in 2010. He threw for 2,002 yards, ranking ninth on the Davidson single-season chart. His 197 completions are the fourth-most in a season at Davidson, and his 59.9 completion percentage (329 attempts) also ranks fourth. He threw for 12 touchdowns with nine interceptions and set the school record with 41 completions at Drake Oct. 23.
The Wildcats return 15 starters, including five all-league players, to the 2011 team. Davidson kicks off the season at Georgetown Sept. 3.
