UNCC A SoCon Member?
School officials at UNC-Charlotte have approached the Southern Conference concerning the possibility of becoming an associate member in football only.
UNCC made the proposal during the SoCon’s annual spring meetings in Charleston, SC. The 49ers won’t field a football team until 2013, but SoCon commissioner John Iamarino said school presidents will vote on the issue June 16.
“We didn’t vote on it or make any kind of decision,” University of Tennessee at Chattanooga athletic director Rick Hart said. “I anticipate that it’s something the [presidents] will take up and vote amongst themselves. As ADs, I think we’re comfortable and happy with where we are in terms of membership.”
UNCC is currently a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The SoCon also established a committee, made up of athletic directors and coaches, to see how it can raise the visibility of men’s basketball.
