The senior cornerback is one of twenty players named to the Preseason Buck Buchanan Award Watch List. The award is given annually to the top defensive player at the Football Championship Subdivision level. Asa is the only player from the Great West Conference on the list.
Last yaer, Jackson recorded 55 tackles, two interceptions and nine pass breakups and was named to the All-Great West Conference first team for the third straight year.
Already hailed by the Sports Network as one of the top ten returning defensive backs in the FCS, Asa was named to the preseason watch list for punt returners. He finished 14th in the nation last season by averaging 12.7 yards per punt return.
The senior, who was clocked in the 40 yard dash at 4.40 seconds, says being named to the Buchanan Watch List is a huge honor and one that will push him to work harder than ever before. “Knowing that you have people out there who think highly of you and who think you can do big things, it does add a little bit,” said Jackson. “I take pride in it, but it’s time to put a little extra work in and go prove them right.”
Cal Poly players won an unprecedented three straight Buck Buchanan Awards from 2004 to 2006 when Jordan Beck, Chris Gocong and Kyle Shotwell were recognized as the top defensive player in the FCS.
The watch list will be updated throughout the year, before its awarded after the season.
The Mustangs open preseason training camp on August 8. On a scale from 1 to 10 regarding his excitement for training camp, Jackson said he was a 15.
