Watson Brown sees deep roster for TTU Golden Eagles
Tennessee Tech coach Watson Brown is feeling optimistic now that his young Golden Eagles finally have grown up.
The Golden Eagles have been picked to finish fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference. But Watson has 21 starters - and 49 letter winners - back on a team that now is among the OVC’s deepest and most experienced teams.
“We aren’t young pups anymore,” said senior wide receiver Tim Benford, who was named to the All-OVC preseason team. “We’re all old hands. We know what we need to do to win. We have the experience. We have the depth. All we have to do is go out there, do our part and be accountable for what we do.”
The Golden Eagles finished 5-6 last season and 4-4 in the OVC. But they are looking to build on their season-ending upset of then-FCS No. 6 Jacksonville State when they rallied from a 17-point deficit to win 35-24.
That victory is why Tennessee Tech is touting its system as “the Fastest 60 Minutes in Football” while trying to speed up the game in all aspects.
“I don’t think anybody in the conference is deeper than us, there may be some better players at spots than us, but they’re not deeper,” Brown said.
Tech opens the season Sept. 3 at Iowa before returning home Sept. 8 against Division III-Maryville College. The Golden Eagles’ OVC slate opens on Sept. 17 at Eastern Illinois.
