Media, Coaches say S.C. State is the new Boxtorow #1, Ellis is POTW
After knocking off Bethune-Cookman 26-18 on Saturday in Daytona Beach, FL the South Carolina State Bulldogs were voted #1 this week in the Boxtorow HBCU Football media and coaches polls.
The Bulldogs received all 24 first-place votes from the media while receiving 10 of 15 first place votes from the coaches.

Jackson State, by virtue of Florida A&M and Grambling State losing and its 35-29 victory over Tennessee State in the Southern Heritage Classic, jumped from #5 to #2 this week. Bethune-Cookman fell to #3, while Hampton with an impressive 23-17 victory over Florida A&M on Thursday on national television jumped from #8 to #4. Albany State moved up one spot from last week and rounds out the top five.
The remainder of the media poll sees Grambling State at #6, Florida A&M at #7, Alabama State dropping one spot to #8, and despite its 55-12 loss to FBS opponent West Virginia, Norfolk State remains at #9. Delaware State who is 2-0 and came back from 15 points down in the fourth quarter to defeat Shaw 31-27 on Saturday debuts at #10.
As for the coaches poll, Jackson State received two first-place votes and was voted to the second spot this week while Hampton, who also received two first place votes, moved up four spots from last week to #3. Bethune-Cookman received a first-place vote and is #4, while Grambling falls three spots to #5.
Florida A&M is #6, followed by Norfolk State at #7. Alabama State remains #8 from last week, while Tennessee Stated dropped one spot from #9. Delaware State also debuts this week in the coaches poll and rounds out the top 10.
Top games in HBCU football this week includes Grambling at Alabama State, while Jackson State will travel to Baton Rouge, LA to take on Southern (1-1).

The voters in the media poll are comprised of some of the top media members in the country who cover HBCU football. The coaches poll is voted on by the FCS HBCU coaches. The media poll is in its fifth year and the coaches poll is in its third.

Ellis named Boxtorow National Player of the Week
South Carolina State defensive back Dominique Ellis was named Boxtorow National Player of the Week. The 5-11, Senior from Union City, GA had a huge game in the Bulldogs 26-18 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. Ellis recorded two interceptions, nine tackles (six solo) and one pass breakup in the Bulldogs’ 26-18 win over Bethune-Cookman. Both interceptions thwarted Wildcat drives, including his second interception which he returned 55 yards for a touchdown that sealed the victory for the Bulldogs.
