In an announcement made by Cal Poly director of athletics Don Oberhelman and head football coach Tim Walsh, Hansen will coach the Mustangs’ defensive secondary.
The hiring of Hanson, 44, completes the coaching staff following the departure of former defensive coordinator and secondary coach Greg Lupfer to Colorado State a month ago.
Josh Brown, special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach at Cal Poly the last two seasons, was recently promoted to the position of defensive coordinator. He will continue to coach the linebackers.
“Randy coached with me at Portland State and was instrumental in a lot of the successes we had there,” said Walsh. “He has added to those experiences and will continue to help us grow as a college football team.”
Hanson was a quarterback at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton in 1987, followed by playing stints at Walla Walla Community College (1988-89) and Pacific (Oregon) (1990-91), where he graduated in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in communications.
Hanson began his coaching career as the assistant defensive backs coach at Eastern Washington (1993–95). He then became a graduate assistant coach on defense at Washington (1996–97) before returning to Eastern Washington as secondary coach (1998–99).
From 2000–02 he was the secondary coach at Portland State under Walsh and added the role of special teams coordinator the final two years (2001–02).
In 2003, Hanson was hired as an offensive quality control/quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings under head coach Mike Tice. He was promoted by the Vikings to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2005 and served as quality control coach/running backs coach under head coach Scott Linehan with the St. Louis Rams in 2006.
In 2007 Hanson joined the Oakland Raiders as assistant secondary coach and third-down specialist under Lane Kiffen. In January 2009 the Raiders promoted Hanson to assistant coach on defense. Hanson was re-assigned to the team’s scouting department in December 2009.
Hanson joined head coach Dennis Green and the Sacramento Mountain Lions in 2011 as the assistant secondary/safeties coach.
