Idaho could be destined to be first FBS casualty of realignment
The Sun Belt Conference announced the addition of non-football member Texas-Arlington Wednesday, and with that declared their expansion efforts to be complete for the time being. The confirmation that the conference was not looking to organize a conference eligible for a conference championship game was heard as far as the state of Idaho, where the Idaho Vandals look as though they could become the first legitimate casualty of conference realignment madness.
It is no secret that the WAC is currently on a ledge and ready to take a final plunge. The 2012 season could be the final chapter in the conference’s football history, with just two current members remaining in the conference after this fall. Boise State left for the Mountain West Conference in 2011, and will join the Big East in 2013. Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii are joining the Mountain West Conference this fall, and San Jose State and Utah State will follow in 2013, the same year Louisiana Tech and Texas San Antonio will join Conference USA and Texas State will join the Sun Belt Conference.
