Could invite to FBS Conference be coming soon for Georgia Southern?
Georgia Southern Athletic Director talks about move to FBS
Georgia Southern University’s move from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision appears to be picking up steam.
With realignment in major college football, Georgia Southern Athletic Director Tom Kleinlein says a move is in the works.
“I’ve been talking to a lot of people about the Georgia Southern brand and we’ll see how things pan out over the next couple of days,” said Kleinlein.
The move from FCS to FBS a hot topic Thursday night as Kleinlein and other Georgia Southern officials visited with Eagle fans at Coach’s Corner on Victory Drive.
The topic of landing a FBS conference invite is hot as ever thanks to the recent announcement that Middle Tennessee State and Florida Atlantic are leaving the Sun Belt Conference for Conference USA.
Georgia Southern University has already taken steps to lock up the funds needed to make a move up. Students recently voted for and passed an increase to fees to fund the expansion of Paulson Stadium and to fund the possible move to the FBS.
“We’ll be busy with it over the next couple of days,” added Kleinlein.
According to CBSSports.com, New Mexico State, Idaho and Georgia Southern are considered potential replacements for MTSU and Florida Atlantic in the Sun Belt Conference.
Kleinlein, who was introduced as Georgia Southern new Athletic Director just a couple weeks ago, is in the process of moving his family to Statesboro. Kleinlein comes to Georgia Southern from Kent State University.
