Bison Stun Kansas; League Completes Successful Week
Missouri Valley Football Conference schools completed a successful week Saturday with two more wins, wrapping up a 6-1 non-conference slate in the first weekend for Division I football. The most significant win of the day was a 6-3 North Dakota State win at Kansas, marking the league’s first FBS win in three years.
Football Recruiting Scene Changing Fast
Area colleges know they have to get to prospective players first; schools ‘want to defend turf’.
BROOKINGS - Encircled by campers hailing from the areas that he recruited, South Dakota State football assistant Luke Meadows gave a word of caution before dismissal: Don’t panic if you don’t get a scholarship offer today.
That’s where things are right now in the Football Championship Subdivision. Upcoming juniors and seniors in the Upper Midwest expect to get an offer either during an elite camp - which is against NCAA rules - or immediately afterward.
Football conference in flux at South Dakota?
Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, the University of South Dakota athletic department will move from the Great West Conference to the Summit League for all sports.
All sports that is except football.
For now, the department’s premier program will remain a member of the far-flung Great West Conference.
New USD athletic director Dave Sayler is keeping his options open when it comes to football’s current home and potential future conferences.
Several FCS schools not looking to make FBS jump
While some of the biggest conferences in Division 1 athletics have made changes in membership of late, some prominent Division 1-AA schools aren’t looking to move anytime soon.
Illinois State University, North Dakota State University and Southern Illinois University have all said there is no interest in moving their football programs to the Football Bowl Subdivision at this time.
Summit League Will Conduct Football Feasibility Study
ELMHURST, Ill. - The Summit League conducted its annual President’s Council Meeting on June 21 in Chicago and announced that the league will conduct a feasibility study into having football as a league-sponsored sport.
MVFC, Big Sky commissioners stunned by conference expansion elsewhere
Patty Viverito has been the commissioner of the Missouri Valley Football Conference since 1982. There’s not much she hasn’t seen.
Then again, nobody foresaw what happened last week – like Nebraska joining the Big Ten Conference and Colorado jumping to the Pac-10. It’s a series of events that left even Viverito searching for words.
That’s saying something.
“Blown away,” she said. “I don’t know what to believe or what not to believe.”
NDSU Announces Six-Game Home Football Schedule With Addition of Morgan State
FARGO, N.D.–North Dakota State University finalized its 2010 football schedule with a 6 p.m. home game against Morgan State University on Saturday, Sept. 18 in the Fargodome. NDSU director of athletics Gene Taylor made the announcement today. The Bison have six home games on the 2010 schedule.
New NDSU President Wants To Be Involved In Athletics
The new North Dakota State president says he will be “highly interested and highly involved” with Bison athletics. But he also said to not confuse that with micromanaging.
NDSU football: Sigers shows speed with 97-yard run
The flaming meteor that crashed into the Midwest earlier this week still had some life to it on Saturday. It hit the North Dakota State defense in an intrasquad spring football scrimmage.
Running back Mike Sigers looked like he had jet-powered shoes on a 97-yard touchdown run against the No. 1 defense. Although no statistics were kept, Sigers probably threatened the 200-yard mark in the scheduled 70-play practice.
With NDSU football, when is enough, enough?
Seems like just yesterday when Craig Bohl’s recruiting expertise was being questioned. The North Dakota State head football coach himself admitted recruiting had to improve in order to turn around disappointing 3-8 and 6-5 seasons.
Now, his recruiting methods are being questioned again. After kicking two players off his team last week – bringing that number to six in the last 12 months – some are wondering what kind of players Bohl is bringing into his program.
Some are asking when is enough, enough – especially after last week’s dismissal of Garrett Johnson and Greg Reid, who were charged with being involved in the mind-boggling theft ring at Fargo’s Best Buy.
NDSU football: QB Mohler tops two others for No. 1 spot
North Dakota State head coach Craig Bohl couldn’t wait to talk about football on Wednesday. After taking several questions on the dismissal of two of his players, a question was asked of his team.
There was some news to share.
Sophomore Jose Mohler emerged from last Saturday’s first spring football scrimmage as the No. 1 quarterback. Mohler is locked in a battle with junior Dante Perez and freshman Brock Jensen.
But there isn’t much separation between the three.
NDSU football: Johnson, Reid let go after theft charges
Garrett Johnson and Greg Reid, two North Dakota State football players who were suspended in March, were dismissed from the team, head coach Craig Bohl said Wednesday.
Both were charged in connection with thefts from a Fargo Best Buy store.
NDSU football: Bison find their back
FARGO — North Dakota State running back D.J. McNorton had two carries Saturday in his team’s intrasquad scrimmage at the Fargodome. One went for 60 yards and the other for 19.
He’ll be busier this fall.
McNorton has emerged as the starter halfway through spring football and will get the first crack in August to replace Pat Paschall. Now a junior, he has sliced two-tenths of a second off his 40-yard dash time to the 4.5 range since he’s been at NDSU.
Bison plan to use old style of NDSU defense
Craig Bohl knew he needed to fix his defense this spring. NDSU allowed an average of 29 points a game last season.
So when he hired Scott Hazelton as Defensive Coordinator in January, he wanted to go back to the old style of NDSU defense which is the ball hawking, and stopping teams from being able to run the ball and the transformation is coming along.
NDSU-UND football game remains on hold with schools at impasse
The athletic directors at North Dakota State and the University of North Dakota are at a stalemate in renewing the football series. And there appears to be no hope for checkmate in the near future.
The crux of the problem is the frequency of the game. UND’s Brian Faison wants to play every year; NDSU’s Gene Taylor prefers every other year.
Polasek to coach NDSU’s special teams unit
North Dakota State running backs coach Tim Polasek added the title of recruiting coordinator last year. This spring, he’s added another one: special teams coordinator.
For the first time in Craig Bohl’s eight years as the Bison head coach, one person will be in charge of punts and kickoffs – the result of some inconsistent performances in the last couple of seasons.
Bohl suspends two NDSU football players
North Dakota State head coach Craig Bohl suspended starting defensive end Garrett Johnson and backup defensive tackle Greg Reid for a violation of team rules. He would not elaborate, saying “that’s as far as I can go.”
Bison defense shines early
FARGO — It was cold and windy Saturday for the opening day of North Dakota State spring football practice, but that didn’t stop some defensive players from celebrating a few interceptions. It was a sight not seen very often last season.
The Bison had just three, ranking them 117th in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision out of 118 teams. Western Carolina was last with two.
NDSU opens spring practice with wide-open battle at quarterback
Dante Perez is a junior who hasn’t played in a game since 2008. Jose Mohler is a sophomore who has played four games. Brock Jensen is a freshman who hasn’t played since his high school senior season in 2008.
One of the three is expected to emerge as the North Dakota State starting quarterback by the end of April.
The Bison open spring football practice today and the competition for the No. 1 job is wide open, said head coach Craig Bohl. He said all three will get equal repetitions in practice unless there is separation along the way.
