NEW YORK – The Hampton University athletics program was tabbed as the top-ranked NCAA Division I Historically Black College & University (HBCU) program on Monday, based on the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup.
The Directors’ Cup is presented annually to the best college programs in NCAA Divisions I, II, III and the NAIA. The Pirates wound up 125th in the overall rankings with 131.88 points. Most of those points came thanks to the women’s basketball program, as well as the indoor and outdoor track & field teams.
A Tale of Two Conferences: SWAC supports Legacy Bowl; MEAC schools against it
On paper, it seemed brilliant and simple.
The Legacy Bowl would pit the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference – against each other. Airing on ESPN, it would guarantee a $3 million payout to be split by the conferences. It would also end the arguments, such as when South Carolina State edged out Prairie View A&M for the Sheridan Broadcasting Network’s Black National Championship – neither team played each other (in fact, the MEAC and SWAC rarely play each other).

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Heritage Bowl, pitting schools from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) will be restored under the name of the “Legacy Bowl".
This report comes to College Sporting News through sources on TSPNSports.com, who heard the initial report on the Jaguar Journal radio show out of Baton Rouge, La.

Who Will Be the Next Joe Flacco?
Few casual football fans knew who Johnny Knox was until February.
That’s when Knox ran his 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, posting a 4.34. Immediately, most football fanatics, especially those with teams that could use his blazing speed, had some homework to do.
“I knew all I had to do was go out there and run fast and everything else would work out,” said Knox, who caught 121 passes for 2,227 yards and 30 touchdowns in his two seasons at Abilene Christian, a Division II program in Texas.

Hampton Undergoes Three Major Coaching Changes, Raising Issues
HAMPTON — Hampton University will enter the 2009-10 school year with new leadership in its three most visible sports, unusual flux in what is traditionally one of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s most stable and successful athletic programs.
HU is the only Division I athletic program in the country to replace its football and men’s and women’s basketball coaches this year. All three replacements were hired within a matter of hours and promoted from the previous staffs or within the university.
“I consider myself to be a student of Vince Lombardi,” HU athletic director Lonza Hardy said last week, referring to the Pro Football Hall of Fame coach. “Vince Lombardi said, ‘Never apologize for trying to win.’ Consequently, I don’t apologize for putting what I believe are the right people in the right places at the right time.”
Attitude Shift at HU
HAMPTON - Donovan Rose understood better than most that Hampton University football was in its most turbulent period in recent history. Three head coaches in 13 months. Two consecutive sub-par seasons for a program accustomed to competing for championships.
