Sempier still gets a kick out of coaching
It’s a picture-perfect dry and comfortable Saturday afternoon in mid-August. The Toyota Corolla – which has logged more than 160,000 miles while its driver traverses the Garden State in a never-ending quest to train kicking prospects – pulls up to the curb alongside Bonnel Field in West Caldwell.
As Verona native Pat Sempier exits the driver’s side door and heads to the car’s trunk in order to grab a bagful of footballs before heading out to the field, the single, unmistakable aspect one notices is not the missing hubcap on the front left tire.
Much more striking is the smile on the face of the man, 76 years young, and as excited about beginning year 52 as the state’s top kicking coach as he was when he coached early success stories like Bruce Nugent at Cedar Grove in 1963. Read more about that later on.
Hampton Reigns as Top-Ranked HBCU Division I Program
NEW YORK – The Hampton University athletics program was tabbed as the top-ranked NCAA Division I Historically Black College & University (HBCU) program on Monday, based on the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup.
The Directors’ Cup is presented annually to the best college programs in NCAA Divisions I, II, III and the NAIA. The Pirates wound up 125th in the overall rankings with 131.88 points. Most of those points came thanks to the women’s basketball program, as well as the indoor and outdoor track & field teams.
Letter from President of Black College Sports Network to HBCU Conferences
Open Letter to the HBCU Conferences - Please Post & Pass Along
The following letter was sent to each of the HBCU Conference Commissioners on Thursday 24 June 2010 . As an Alum & Fan I was concerned about the direction in which HBCU sports were headed. As a business man I am disappointed with the process and conduct as a whole in regards to the way that ” our business” was being managed. With that in mind and in an effort to assist with the correction of our path I reached out to the leaders of the CIAA, MEAC, SIAC, & SWAC. This gesture was to offer assistance in creating an aggressive plan that will benefit ALL HBCU’s athletically and academically!!! I am pleased to say that I have gotten positive, open-minded responses from most of the commissioners and we are now into the next phase of planning a summit.
A Tale of Two Conferences: SWAC supports Legacy Bowl; MEAC schools against it
On paper, it seemed brilliant and simple.
The Legacy Bowl would pit the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference – against each other. Airing on ESPN, it would guarantee a $3 million payout to be split by the conferences. It would also end the arguments, such as when South Carolina State edged out Prairie View A&M for the Sheridan Broadcasting Network’s Black National Championship – neither team played each other (in fact, the MEAC and SWAC rarely play each other).

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Heritage Bowl, pitting schools from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) will be restored under the name of the “Legacy Bowl".
This report comes to College Sporting News through sources on TSPNSports.com, who heard the initial report on the Jaguar Journal radio show out of Baton Rouge, La.

Frighteningly Good: Long, Young lead Bulldogs to Easy Halloween Win
For one game, head coach Oliver “Buddy” Pough did not have to answer questions about 10th-ranked South Carolina State’s second-half scoring difficulties.
Against Delaware State Saturday for homecoming, the Bulldogs quickly made the topic a non-issue. Sparked by a record-boosting performance by wide receiver Tre Young and career passing day by quarterback Malcolm Long, S.C. State scored early and often in rolling to a 52-10 victory.
“Probably our best all-around effort I guess,” Pough said. “I do think that we played very, very well for awhile. They got a chance to make plays on us, but we made more plays than they did this afternoon and I’m just excited by the fact that we continue to improve.”
For Small Schools, There's A Big Payoff To Road Trips
The coaches and players at 3,534-student Delaware State know their chances of winning at mighty Michigan later this season are slim at best. But they also understand why their program, which plays a level of NCAA football below that of the Wolverines, will make the trip: a $550,000 payday. At Delaware State, that’s equivalent to the revenue from at least two years of home games.
“From a competitive standpoint, it’s not an ideal situation,” says Delaware State football coach Al Lavan, whose team plays in a 7,000-seat stadium, compared with the 106,000-seat Michigan Stadium. “(But) you always have hope.”

Around FCS: Ford vs. Pulley for 2009 MEAC title
From the moment the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football schedule was finalized, South Carolina State and Florida A&M have circled Oct. 17 on their calendars.
NCAA bans championship tournaments in states that allow betting on single games
The NCAA approved a policy Thursday that would ban states, such as Delaware, from hosting championship events if they allow fans to bet on single games.
Chancellors and presidents from all three NCAA divisions approved the measure, saying it applies to “any session of an NCAA championship,” though it does not apply to states that allow parlay betting, lottery tickets, pull tabs and sports pools.
The move came one day after a federal judge denied a request by professional sports leagues and the NCAA to halt Delaware’s planned sports betting lottery until a legal challenge is resolved.
Congress banned sports betting in 1992 while grandfathering four states — Delaware, Nevada, Montana and Oregon — that had already offered it. The lawsuit filed by the four major pro sports leagues and the NCAA argues that Delaware’s plan to allow single-game betting would violate the legislation because Delaware has never offered single-game betting before.
MEAC Announces 2009 Preseason Honors
South Carolina State Picked to Win 2009 MEAC Crown
South Carolina State’s Will Ford and Norfolk State’s Terrell Whitehead earned the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s (MEAC) top football preseason awards, as announced by the league on Friday afternoon at the Newport News Marriott. Ford was selected as the preseason Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight year while Whitehead was named the preseason Defensive Player of the Year as voted on by the conference’s Head Coaches and Sports Information Directors.
Delaware FCS Teams Could Host Games Despite Betting
Delaware colleges and universities could get a reprieve and be able to host NCAA playoff games, despite the state’s recent approval of sports betting.
The NCAA Executive Committee will vote next month on a proposal recently approved by its championships cabinet that would allow teams that earn the right, through successful competition, to host NCAA games, said Tom Yeager, commissioner of the Colonial Athletic Association. Schools in Delaware still could not host neutral-site events.
That would particularly impact the University of Delaware, a CAA member, and Wesley College. Both have been frequent hosts of NCAA football playoff games – Delaware as a member of the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) and Wesley in Division III.
Miscommunication forces DSU to forfeit game
DOVER – Derek Carter doesn’t know exactly how it happened, but he vows it will not happen again.
Carter, who started his tenure as athletic director at Delaware State University on May 11, said Monday that miscommunication led to the Hornets’ forfeit of an Oct. 17 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football game against North Carolina A&T.
DSU's haul at Michigan: $550,000
Delaware State University generated $2.2 million in revenue through its football program in the 2007-08 school year, according to the United States Department of Education.
In October, the school will earn almost 25 percent of that by playing one football game.
MEAC Reviews Delaware State's League Forfeit to Face Michigan
The commissioner of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is reviewing a decision by Delaware State to forfeit a league game next year because of a conflict with a big-money contest at Michigan. But the school said it does not plan to play its conference game with North Carolina A&T and fully expects some kind of fine from the MEAC.
Former Delaware State RB Beasley to be Inducted into Delaware HOF
Nate Beasley, who starred at running back for the University of Delaware during the mid-1970’s and earned All-American honors as a junior in 1974 after transfering form Delaware State, is one of eight inductees into the 2009 class of the Delaware Afro American Sports Hall of Fame.
Norfolk State Wants a Day Off; Delaware State Wants to Cash In
Delaware State wants a record pay day. Norfolk State just wants a day off.
The conference rivals, accustomed to knocking heads on the football field, are beginning early this year, in a tussle over scheduling.
The Hornets, hoping to bank $500,000 by playing at Michigan, have asked Norfolk State to move a game at Delaware State from Nov. 14 to Oct. 3. The problem, that’s the Spartans’ open date. Move the game, and NSU would play 10 straight weeks without a break - after four weeks of preseason camp.
Delaware, Delaware State Warned to Prepare if State Legalizes Wagers
Delaware is home to only one professional sports franchise – a minor-league baseball team – and University of Delaware football is the only college team that draws large crowds.
But that does not tell the whole story about Delawareans’ interest in sports.
Last year, when the Phillies marched toward the World Series title, it seemed everyone was wearing red. And that provided only temporary respite to the usual fall obsession, the Eagles.
This rabid allegiance to sports teams is maybe best seen on college campuses, where football and basketball teams move students to shave their heads, paint their bodies and brave subfreezing temperatures with no shirts.
