Hampton Reigns as Top-Ranked HBCU Division I Program
NEW YORK – The Hampton University athletics program was tabbed as the top-ranked NCAA Division I Historically Black College & University (HBCU) program on Monday, based on the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup.
The Directors’ Cup is presented annually to the best college programs in NCAA Divisions I, II, III and the NAIA. The Pirates wound up 125th in the overall rankings with 131.88 points. Most of those points came thanks to the women’s basketball program, as well as the indoor and outdoor track & field teams.
Letter from President of Black College Sports Network to HBCU Conferences
Open Letter to the HBCU Conferences - Please Post & Pass Along
The following letter was sent to each of the HBCU Conference Commissioners on Thursday 24 June 2010 . As an Alum & Fan I was concerned about the direction in which HBCU sports were headed. As a business man I am disappointed with the process and conduct as a whole in regards to the way that ” our business” was being managed. With that in mind and in an effort to assist with the correction of our path I reached out to the leaders of the CIAA, MEAC, SIAC, & SWAC. This gesture was to offer assistance in creating an aggressive plan that will benefit ALL HBCU’s athletically and academically!!! I am pleased to say that I have gotten positive, open-minded responses from most of the commissioners and we are now into the next phase of planning a summit.
A Tale of Two Conferences: SWAC supports Legacy Bowl; MEAC schools against it
On paper, it seemed brilliant and simple.
The Legacy Bowl would pit the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference – against each other. Airing on ESPN, it would guarantee a $3 million payout to be split by the conferences. It would also end the arguments, such as when South Carolina State edged out Prairie View A&M for the Sheridan Broadcasting Network’s Black National Championship – neither team played each other (in fact, the MEAC and SWAC rarely play each other).

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Heritage Bowl, pitting schools from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) will be restored under the name of the “Legacy Bowl".
This report comes to College Sporting News through sources on TSPNSports.com, who heard the initial report on the Jaguar Journal radio show out of Baton Rouge, La.

Around FCS: Ford vs. Pulley for 2009 MEAC title
From the moment the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football schedule was finalized, South Carolina State and Florida A&M have circled Oct. 17 on their calendars.
Whitehead among final candidates on Buchanan watch list
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Norfolk State free safety Terrell Whitehead is among the four most recent candidates added to the watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award, presented annually to the top defensive player in FCS.
Whitehead, also a member of the 2008 Buchanan Award preseason watch list, is a two-time Sports Network All-American. The playmaking secondary man has 13 career interceptions and 179 career tackles to his credit.
Other players added to the list were Stephen F. Austin linebacker Jabara Williams, Gardner-Webb linebacker Jeffery Williams and Penn cornerback Chris Wynn.

Top College Level Isn’t the Only Source for NFL Talent in Virginia
Ten players from Virginia schools were selected in the 2009 NFL draft. Only half were Hoos or Hokies.
From colleges other than Virginia and Virginia Tech, the NFL’s 256-player harvest included: a third-rounder from William and Mary (CB Derek Cox); a fourth-rounder from the University of Richmond (DE Lawrence Sidbury); a fourth-rounder from Saint Paul’s (CB Greg Toler); a sixth-rounder from Norfolk State (CB Don Carey); and a seventh-rounder from Liberty (RB Rashad Jennings).
Norfolk State Wants a Day Off; Delaware State Wants to Cash In
Delaware State wants a record pay day. Norfolk State just wants a day off.
The conference rivals, accustomed to knocking heads on the football field, are beginning early this year, in a tussle over scheduling.
The Hornets, hoping to bank $500,000 by playing at Michigan, have asked Norfolk State to move a game at Delaware State from Nov. 14 to Oct. 3. The problem, that’s the Spartans’ open date. Move the game, and NSU would play 10 straight weeks without a break - after four weeks of preseason camp.

Football Supplier to FCS Schools Facing Blitz from Campus Activists
Russell Athletic, a major supplier of sports apparel to collegiate and professional sports teams, is facing an all-out blitz from campus activists.
Twenty-five U.S. colleges have cut ties to Atlanta-based Russell over alleged abuse of workers’ rights at its plant in Honduras. Russell supplies game uniforms and accessories to schools across the country, including four historically black college leagues: the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Southwestern Athletic Conference and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
MEAC Expansion Could Bring 2 Divisions, Title Game
Fourteen schools. Two divisions. One conference.
That’s the direction the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has set for itself in announcing last week that the league has lifted a moratorium on expansion.
The MEAC, which includes Norfolk State and Hampton, could soon be adding North Carolina Central and Savannah State. Both institutions have submitted applications to join the league, currently comprised of 11 schools, nine of which play football. Winston-Salem State, which also plays football, is working toward inclusion in the MEAC in 2011.

NSU Has Proven to be a Perfect Fit for DB Carey
NORFOLK - Don Carey made the only choice he could make after being offered a partial scholarship to Yale:
He enrolled at Norfolk State.
“I couldn’t afford it,” the Spartans senior cornerback said as he prepared for today’s 1 p.m. homecoming game against Florida A&M . “That’s a lot of money. I never minded coming to Norfolk State.”
Set to graduate this spring with a degree in building construction technology, Carey said he’s grateful, not bitter. Since the day he set foot on campus, he became an integral part of the Spartans’ building plan, playing in every game his freshman year and starting the final 10. His mother and three sisters, all living in Norfolk, got to watch it all.
W&M's Laycock: "We Are Extremely Banged Up"
Today, I attended the weekly Tribe Football Luncheon at the Hospitality House. Lunch was baked salmon and mashed potatoes, a far cry from the Caf, and it was a relatively full house as two camera crews were present from the Norfolk CBS and NBC affiliates.
Evidently, the Spartans take their football quite seriously down the road in Norfolk.
Norfolk State Holds on for 27-21 Win in MEAC Opener
NORFOLK - Holding on to the ball was a problem for Norfolk State on Saturday at Price Stadium. Despite that, the Spartans were able to hold on 27-21 in their MEAC opener against North Carolina A&T.
It was an evening when a surprise shower soaked the field to start the fourth quarter, a respite from the humidity of late afternoon, when many Spartans suffered cramps. That was just something else for NSU to overcome - along with four fumbles, a blocked punt and a momentum swing after the Aggies rang up 14 third-quarter points.
Norfolk State Hopes Virginia State Game Starts Something Big
NORFOLK - James Riddick lists the priorities for any Norfolk State football fan. No. 1 is beat Virginia State in the opener. No. 2: beat Hampton. No. 3 is beat everyone else in the MEAC.
It’s a sentiment shared by many Spartan diehards, most of who will fill Dick Price Stadium tonight for the annual Labor Day Classic against the Trojans.
Preview: SCSU Bulldogs, Del. St. Cream of MEAC
For the second year in a row, South Carolina State has been voted the preseason favorite to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship, much to Buddy Pough’s surprise.
The Bulldogs received 272 points in the poll of MEAC coaches and sports information directors, 20 more than defending champion Delaware State. S.C. State and the Hornets both received six first-place votes.
