Legend gets his due
Jeffries reflects on his journey through college football history before Hall of Fame induction
Willie Jeffries, his wife, Mary, and two of his children have a road trip on tap this week to South Bend, Ind.
It’s not a pilgrimage to Notre Dame.
No, Jeffries is going to take his appointed place in the College Football Hall of Fame. The 2010 Enshrinement Festival runs Saturday and Sunday.
“It is quite an honor for me,” said Jeffries, whose 29-year college coaching career netted a 179-132-6 record, including a 128-77-4 mark in 19 seasons during twostints at South Carolina State, his alma mater.
“Being inducted into the college football hall of fame is the apex of my profession. In all my years of coaching, I never thought about any halls of fame, especially this one. There is no greater honor for a coach.”
Letter from President of Black College Sports Network to HBCU Conferences
Open Letter to the HBCU Conferences - Please Post & Pass Along
The following letter was sent to each of the HBCU Conference Commissioners on Thursday 24 June 2010 . As an Alum & Fan I was concerned about the direction in which HBCU sports were headed. As a business man I am disappointed with the process and conduct as a whole in regards to the way that ” our business” was being managed. With that in mind and in an effort to assist with the correction of our path I reached out to the leaders of the CIAA, MEAC, SIAC, & SWAC. This gesture was to offer assistance in creating an aggressive plan that will benefit ALL HBCU’s athletically and academically!!! I am pleased to say that I have gotten positive, open-minded responses from most of the commissioners and we are now into the next phase of planning a summit.
A Tale of Two Conferences: SWAC supports Legacy Bowl; MEAC schools against it
On paper, it seemed brilliant and simple.
The Legacy Bowl would pit the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference – against each other. Airing on ESPN, it would guarantee a $3 million payout to be split by the conferences. It would also end the arguments, such as when South Carolina State edged out Prairie View A&M for the Sheridan Broadcasting Network’s Black National Championship – neither team played each other (in fact, the MEAC and SWAC rarely play each other).

This report comes to College Sporting News through sources on TSPNSports.com, who heard the initial report on the Jaguar Journal radio show out of Baton Rouge, La.
S.C. State football expects even more improvement
After two years of playing on an elite level, South Carolina State must replace key personnel entering this fall.
But with the state of his program, coach Buddy Pough doesn’t believe in using the ‘R’ word.
“I don’t think we can talk about rebuilding anymore,” he said. “Our program’s at the point now where we put some guys in some different spots and we continue to move on. We’ve got to be better.
Defense Dominates In S.C. State Spring Game
The old adage “every dog has his day” proved true Saturday for South Carolina State Bulldog defensive lineman Joe Council.
It’s been a quiet three seasons for the Walterboro native since his transfer from East Carolina. But, during Saturday’s Spring Game at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium, Council made plenty of noise with his aggressive play up front in helping the Blue (defense) pull away from the Garnet (offense) 24-13.
Ex-Citadel Standout Gets Fresh Start With S.C. State
Two years ago, Asheton Jordan was the top freshman running back in the Southern Conference with a promising future ahead of him at The Citadel.
On Saturday, the Stratford High School product will play in South Carolina State’s Garnet and Blue spring game with an eye toward securing a starting spot on coach Buddy Pough’s team next fall.

S.C. State "Excited" As Spring Camp Begins
The start of spring practice Monday at South Carolina State could not come soon enough for the coaches.
While new strength and conditioning coach Torre Becton was anxiously counting the minutes down before the players exited the Oliver C. Dawson Stadium locker room, wide receivers coach Howard Feggins was staying loose tossing around the pigskin.
Bulldogs’ head coach Oliver “Buddy” Pough was next on the field, driving up in his golf cart and eager to start his ninth spring practice.
“We’re excited, happy to be here,” he said. “Looking forward to seeing what we can be.”
After 9 Years, Pough Still Having Fun
After nine years, the job is still fun for South Carolina State head football coach Oliver “Buddy” Pough.
What’s not to love about coaching his alma mater in his hometown? From leading the Bulldogs to three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference titles, two Top 15 finishes in the national Football Championship Subdivision rankings and a black college football national championship, Pough has reached many of his goals since succeeding Willie Jeffries in 2001.

2010 SCSU Schedule Could Include Delta Devils
Travelling close to 400 miles to face a Southwestern Athletic Conference opponent will not be necessary this year for South Carolina State.
While unconfirmed from both schools, sources indicate S.C. State and Mississippi Valley State are close to finalizing an agreement to face each other Sept. 11 at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in Orangeburg. This will be the first meeting since 1961 between the Bulldogs and Delta Devils, with the teams trading victories in 1960 (16-7 S.C. State) and 1961 (13-8 MVSU).
S.C. State Team To Visit Statehouse Today
The “award tour” for the 2009 South Carolina State football team will come to a head today in the capital city.
Before the General Assembly, the two-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions will receive a concurrent resolution recognizing their accomplishments during a 10 a.m. special ceremony at the Statehouse.
SCSU's Success Due To Selling Points
It’s not about rankings for the South Carolina State football team.
Whether it’s getting into the top 25 in the Football Championship Subdivision or historically black college polls, Bulldog head football coach Oliver “Buddy” Pough takes them all with a grain of salt. At the end of the day, such recognition is appreciated but comes a distant second when compared to wins, losses and championships.
So when Rivals.com ranked S.C. State’s 2010 recruiting class as the second-best among FCS schools with Richmond and Boxtorow.com placed it first among HBCUs, the reaction was as low key as expected.
