Times, they are a-changing at Bethune-Cookman

floatedleftWhen the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats take the field on September 4 against Edward Waters College, a lot of things will look drastically different than they did a calendar year ago. They’ve got a new coach, new field, new logo, new offense, and a new attitude.

The first major change was at the head coaching position. Gone are the days of the flashy outfits, oversized belt buckles and snakeskin boots that came to be known as “Shine’s sideline attire.” Last December, B-CU named former Rutgers wide receivers coach Brian Jenkins the 10th head football coach in school history, replacing all-time winningest head coach Alvin Wyatt after 13 seasons at the helm. This summer the city of Daytona Beach installed new artificial turf to Municipal Stadium and B-CU has opted to scrap the traditional Wildcat logo that adorned helmets for a number of years in favor of a new logo that features a B and C interlocked with wildcat claws flanking each side.

Letter from President of Black College Sports Network to HBCU Conferences

Open Letter to the HBCU Conferences - Please Post & Pass Along

The following letter was sent to each of the HBCU Conference Commissioners on Thursday 24 June 2010 . As an Alum & Fan I was concerned about the direction in which HBCU sports were headed. As a business man I am disappointed with the process and conduct as a whole in regards to the way that ” our business” was being managed. With that in mind and in an effort to assist with the correction of our path I reached out to the leaders of the CIAA, MEAC, SIAC, & SWAC. This gesture was to offer assistance in creating an aggressive plan that will benefit ALL HBCU’s athletically and academically!!! I am pleased to say that I have gotten positive, open-minded responses from most of the commissioners and we are now into the next phase of planning a summit.

A Tale of Two Conferences: SWAC supports Legacy Bowl; MEAC schools against it

On paper, it seemed brilliant and simple.

The Legacy Bowl would pit the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference – against each other. Airing on ESPN, it would guarantee a $3 million payout to be split by the conferences. It would also end the arguments, such as when South Carolina State edged out Prairie View A&M for the Sheridan Broadcasting Network’s Black National Championship – neither team played each other (in fact, the MEAC and SWAC rarely play each other).

That’s the direction the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has set for itself in announcing last week that the league has lifted a moratorium on expansion.

The MEAC, which includes Norfolk State and Hampton, could soon be adding North Carolina Central and Savannah State. Both institutions have submitted applications to join the league, currently comprised of 11 schools, nine of which play football. Winston-Salem State, which also plays football, is working toward inclusion in the MEAC in 2011.

Bethune-Cookman Wildcats Ready To Roll

DAYTONA - Alvin Wyatt clearly enjoys being flashy.

Bethune-Cookman’s football coach has maybe the most distinctive sideline wardrobe in the game. Shirts opened to mid-chest, gaudy jewelry dangling from his neck, sunglasses, pointed shoes with a glossy shine. And when he’s away from the football field, he sometimes can be found driving around Daytona Beach in his luxury sedan. It’s simply part of his lore, the way he’s always been, the way he’ll always be.

Yet Wyatt also has a simple side, the one that is the backbone of his football program.

Rattlers, Wildcats Agree on Something

University presidents not pleased about MEAC-SWAC game at Orlando Citrus Bowl.

Bethune-Cookman University President Trudie Kibbe Reed and Florida A&M University President James H. Ammons denied this week that they have given their blessings to an Orlando HBCU football game scheduled this month between Hampton University and Jackson State University.

In a joint statement, Reed and Ammons said a recent article in the Tallahassee Democrat newspaper incorrectly indicated that the two presidents support the relocation of the annual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Challenge to the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando on Aug. 31.

MEAC Commish Thought that FAMU, B-CU Supported MEAC-SWAC Clash

MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas on Tuesday clarified his response to a question from the Democrat concerning the participation of FAMU and Bethune-Cookman University in the MEAC-SWAC Challenge.

A story in Sunday’s sports section quoted Thomas’ initial response to the schools’ decision. The story also prompted the presidents of FAMU and B-CU to issue a joint statement reiterating their position to not support the game.

Thomas said he thought the question — answered during a MEAC Media Day session last week — implied that the two universities had reversed their decision about participating, and he responded favorably. FAMU and B-CU decided last spring that they would not play in the MEAC-SWAC game after it was moved to Orlando.

We wish to correct the information that was erroneously printed in the Tallahassee Democrat.
