Hampton Reigns as Top-Ranked HBCU Division I Program
NEW YORK – The Hampton University athletics program was tabbed as the top-ranked NCAA Division I Historically Black College & University (HBCU) program on Monday, based on the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup.
The Directors’ Cup is presented annually to the best college programs in NCAA Divisions I, II, III and the NAIA. The Pirates wound up 125th in the overall rankings with 131.88 points. Most of those points came thanks to the women’s basketball program, as well as the indoor and outdoor track & field teams.
Letter from President of Black College Sports Network to HBCU Conferences
Open Letter to the HBCU Conferences - Please Post & Pass Along
The following letter was sent to each of the HBCU Conference Commissioners on Thursday 24 June 2010 . As an Alum & Fan I was concerned about the direction in which HBCU sports were headed. As a business man I am disappointed with the process and conduct as a whole in regards to the way that ” our business” was being managed. With that in mind and in an effort to assist with the correction of our path I reached out to the leaders of the CIAA, MEAC, SIAC, & SWAC. This gesture was to offer assistance in creating an aggressive plan that will benefit ALL HBCU’s athletically and academically!!! I am pleased to say that I have gotten positive, open-minded responses from most of the commissioners and we are now into the next phase of planning a summit.
A Tale of Two Conferences: SWAC supports Legacy Bowl; MEAC schools against it
On paper, it seemed brilliant and simple.
The Legacy Bowl would pit the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference – against each other. Airing on ESPN, it would guarantee a $3 million payout to be split by the conferences. It would also end the arguments, such as when South Carolina State edged out Prairie View A&M for the Sheridan Broadcasting Network’s Black National Championship – neither team played each other (in fact, the MEAC and SWAC rarely play each other).

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Heritage Bowl, pitting schools from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) will be restored under the name of the “Legacy Bowl".

Rain can't dampen Aggies' spirits
GREENSBORO – The sky was gray, the field green, the jerseys blue and gold.
And for one day, at least, the outlook was rosy.
With new head coach Alonzo Lee running the show from the sideline, N.C. A&T’s Blue team defense eked out a 27-26 victory over its Gold team offense in the annual spring game Saturday at Aggie Stadium.
Coastal Finalizes 2009 Football Schedule
Coastal Carolina finalized its 2009 football schedule on Thursday, utilizing the simplest solution to resolve its scheduling conflict.
Coastal will now travel to Towson on Sept. 19, will host N.C. A&T on Sept. 26 and have its bye on Oct. 3, coach David Bennett said. No other changes were necessary to the schedule Coastal released earlier this month. The conflict was created when N.C. A&T mistakenly double-booked two opponents, Coastal and N.C. Central, for Oct. 3.
Football Supplier to FCS Schools Facing Blitz from Campus Activists
Russell Athletic, a major supplier of sports apparel to collegiate and professional sports teams, is facing an all-out blitz from campus activists.
Twenty-five U.S. colleges have cut ties to Atlanta-based Russell over alleged abuse of workers’ rights at its plant in Honduras. Russell supplies game uniforms and accessories to schools across the country, including four historically black college leagues: the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Southwestern Athletic Conference and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
MEAC Expansion Could Bring 2 Divisions, Title Game
Fourteen schools. Two divisions. One conference.
That’s the direction the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has set for itself in announcing last week that the league has lifted a moratorium on expansion.
The MEAC, which includes Norfolk State and Hampton, could soon be adding North Carolina Central and Savannah State. Both institutions have submitted applications to join the league, currently comprised of 11 schools, nine of which play football. Winston-Salem State, which also plays football, is working toward inclusion in the MEAC in 2011.
Winstom-Salem State Requests Fee Raise to Play in Division I
Winston-Salem State University’s move to Division I athletics could be hitting the wall.
Chancellor Donald Reaves of WSSU asked the UNC board of governors to approve an increase in student-athletics fees at a meeting in January, said Joni Worthington, a vice president of communications for the UNC system.
Worthington also said that Erskine Bowles, the UNC president, sent a letter to board members recommending against the increase.
The 32-member board will vote on Reaves’ request and others from other UNC system schools Feb. 13, but without the additional fees, WSSU might not be able to afford to stay on course.

Norfolk State Holds on for 27-21 Win in MEAC Opener
NORFOLK - Holding on to the ball was a problem for Norfolk State on Saturday at Price Stadium. Despite that, the Spartans were able to hold on 27-21 in their MEAC opener against North Carolina A&T.
It was an evening when a surprise shower soaked the field to start the fourth quarter, a respite from the humidity of late afternoon, when many Spartans suffered cramps. That was just something else for NSU to overcome - along with four fumbles, a blocked punt and a momentum swing after the Aggies rang up 14 third-quarter points.
Aggie Pride Rehab Sets the Tone for NC A&T Students
It was electrifying. It was uniting. It was indeed a monumental event in the history of this school year. It was the first football victory in recent years.
However, something was different about this victory. After Saturday’s game, many students were celebratory and optimistic about the season.
There were even students who felt the win foreshadowed the victories Aggies will achieve in all endeavors throughout this academic year.
“Aggie Pride just surpassed the first hurdle in its long road to rehabilitation,” says Marcus Bass, 21, SGA President and senior business education major.
