Eagles have few questions left to answer
With first-year Southern Methodist transfer Bo Levi Mitchell having won the starting quarterback job over six other candidates this spring, Eastern Washington University opened fall football practice on Monday without any major questions to answer – except for the health of Taiwan Jones.
Jones, the Eagles junior running back, had a sensational sophomore season last fall, rushing for 1,212 yards and 15 touchdowns and being named to the All-Big Sky Conference first team. He also landed a spot on the third team of both the Associated Press and The Sports Network NCAA Football Championship Subdivision All-America teams.
But the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder from Antioch, Calif., was held out of all contact drills in the spring, while recovering from a host of physical problems that plagued him during the latter stages of the 2009 season.
Reynolds, Sherritt Lead Preseason Big Sky Team
OGDEN, UTAH (July 19, 2010) – Eastern Washington’s J.C. Sherritt has been selected as the 2010 Big Sky Conference preseason defensive player of the year, while Montana’s Chase Reynolds has been tabbed as the preseason offensive player of the year.
Both senior standouts were also named to the preseason All-Conference team, which was selected by a panel of media and sports information directors.
Eastern to Play Central Washington in Seattle on Sept. 11
In the second version of the “Showdown on the Sound,” the Eastern Washington University versus Central Washington University football game on Sept. 11 will be played at Qwest Field in Seattle. Kickoff has been set for 6 p.m. with the two schools co-hosting the event.
Last season, Eastern defeated Portland State 47-10 on Oct. 31 at Qwest in the inaugural “Showdown on the Sound.” Central annually plays its “Battle in Seattle” at Qwest, and will take on Western Oregon there on Oct. 16.
Eagles see red: Colorful field should be ready in September
When Michael Roos and his wife, Katherine, first pledged $500,000 to jump start Eastern Washington University’s Red Turf Project, they expected the process of replacing Woodward Field’s grass playing surface to evolve in a timely fashion.
But after taking part in Saturday’s “turf-breaking” ceremonies at his former home field in Cheney, Michael Roos admitted he was stunned by the project’s accelerated timetable.
“When you make the kind of monetary commitment, you hope and expect that it will eventually come together and that you’ve generated enough momentum to get everybody else on board,” Roos said after joining university president Rodolfo Arévalo and Rob Nelson, the vice chairman of EWU’s Foundation Board of Directors, in excavating the first three shovelfuls of grass from Woodward’s existing playing surface.
“But I’m amazed at how much money they’ve managed to raise in a matter of six months,” Roos said. “And I’m hoping it will keep going and we’ll be able to get the new scoreboard, too.”

Before they can “Play it on the Red,” the old grass surface has to go.
The official start of Eastern Washington University’s Red Turf project will take place with a “turfbreaking” ceremony on Saturday (June 12) at 5 p.m. at Woodward Field on the EWU campus in Cheney, Wash.
At EWU, Bo Has The Glove
In action this Saturday in the Red-White Game, transfer from SMU looks to take over quarterback reins for Eagles
With so many new quarterbacks vying for the job left vacated by All-American and two-time Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year Matt Nichols, it has been difficult telling apart Eastern Washington University’s field generals in mostly un-numbered blue jerseys this spring.
But Bo has the glove.
MTCHELL REMAINS CONFIDENT, BUT NOT BRASH
As a young man who has spent the better part of the last two seasons as a starting quarterback at an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision school, Bo Levi Mitchell understands the fine line between confidence and brashness.
And Eastern Washington University’s talented, and tactful, first-year transfer from Southern Methodist University artfully walked that fine line again on Saturday after another splendid performance in the Eagles’ second scrimmage of spring drills.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior-to-be and one of five candidates still hoping to step in and replace former four-year starter Matt Nichols as EWU’s starting quarterback next fall, completed 15 of 22 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Eagles’ No. 1 offensive unit to a dominant performance over the shorthanded No. 1 defense at Woodward Field.
Former Ferris star switches roles at Eastern Washington
CHENEY, Wash. - The list of players vying for the open quarterback spot at Eastern Washington just got a little shorter. Eagles head coach Beau Baldwin said former Ferris quarterback Jeff Minnerly will move from the offense to the defensive side of the ball.
Baldwin said Minnerly, who graduated from Ferris in 2008, would move from quarterback to safety, bringing the list of quarterbacks down to five. He said Minnerly would remain the team’s holder on placekicks, and that the decision to move the sophomore to defense gives the Eagles “a greater chance to use his athletic ability".
Minnerly began practicing with the safeties on Tuesday and may see some snaps at the new position at Saturday’s scrimmage in Cheney.

In search of a replacement for a four-year starter at quarterback, the Eastern Washington University football team begins spring practices for the 2010 season on Wednesday, March 31. Third-year head coach Beau Baldwin expects to have about 75 players participating, including 42 returning letter winners.
EWU Road Game at Nevada Helps Finalize 2010 Schedule
All 11 dates are filled, but the site of Sept. 11 game against Central Washington still yet to be determined
The 2010 schedule for the Eastern Washington University football team is nearly complete, as a season-opening road game at Nevada will fill the 11th and final game on its schedule, EWU athletic director Bill Chaves has announced. The schedule includes six home games, but whether five or six of them take place at Woodward Field in Cheney, Wash., has yet to be determined.
Does Eastern Washington Really Need Red Turf?
Opponents visiting Idaho’s capital city playfully refer to the blue playing surface at Bronco Stadium as “smurf turf.”
And since Boise State’s recent rise in football prominence under the leadership of Dan Hawkins and Chris Peterson, the school with the artificially colored grass has enjoyed even further national notoriety from increased television exposure where pundits spend almost as much time talking about the color of the field as they do the Bronco’s varied offensive attack.
And now the Grizzlies, who haven’t played on the blue Boise turf since the Broncos departed the Big Sky Conference after the 1995 season, may again be playing on an oddly colored surface when they visit Eastern Washington University next season.

EWU Star Michael Roos Makes New Red Turf a Reality
Former EWU NFL All-Pro Tackle contributes $500,000 toward the addition of the first red synthetic field in the country
Former Eastern Washington University football standout Michael Roos of the Tennessee Titans has pledged $500,000 toward the university’s “Red Turf” project at EWU’s Woodward Field in Cheney, Wash., Eastern President Rodolfo Arévalo announced today.
The project is slated to take on a very unique twist with the installation of the red synthetic playing surface. The red artificial field will be the first of its kind, not just in NCAA Division I football, but in the entire country.
Eastern Athletic Director Bill Chaves, who is working with associate athletic director for development Marc Hughes on the project, said EWU needs to secure additional funding through private contributions before actual replacement can be started. It is hoped that the project can be funded and completed in time for the 2010 season.

Lumberjacks turn back Eagles, 44-33
Although Stephen F. Austin was shaky at times — one senior wide receiver called it “sloppy” — in its first playoff game since 1995, it was enough to keep the Lumberjacks’ season alive.
Junior quarterback Jeremy Moses threw four touchdown passes, including three in the decisive third quarter, and SFA’s defense came through with big stops late in SFA’s 44-33 decision over Eastern Washington in a Football Championship Subdivison first-round game Saturday at Homer Bryce Stadium.

EWU's Matt Nichols Nears Big Sky Conference Record as Milestones Accumulate
Passing the likes of Dave Dickenson, Doug Nussmeier, John Friesz and eventually Jamie Martin, the senior quarterback needs only 303 yards to break the total offense record for the 46-year-old league.
Only a bye this week for the Eastern Washington University football team has slowed the accumulation of milestones for senior quarterback Matt Nichols.
