ODU Scrimmage #2
Coaching Staff Getting A Better Idea of the Two-Deep
On Saturday evening the ODU Football Monarchs returned to Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium for the second of four planned scrimmages this preseason. As the Monarchs had a good workout on situational football, the coaching staff got better looks at who could be possibly listed on the two-deep for the Monarchs’ season opener against Jacksonville on Sept. 4th.
During the two-minute drill, the scenario was that the defense was up by two. During the drill, the offense was able to pick up a pair of victories.
Let the 2010 Season Being; Monarchs Start Preseason Practice
Monday saw the ODU Football Monarchs hit the field for the first of 22 practices this preseason.
The morning started off with the newcomers on the roster getting timed in the 40-yard dash, followed by team meetings, before gathering on the field in mid-afternoon for the first official practice of the 2010 season.
“I was really excited with the intensity and effort,” said head coach Bobby Wilder. “I could tell they were excited to be out there. Night and day from last year at this time.”

ODU's new AD has deep area ties
Wood Selig left Norfolk years ago, but he never really left Old Dominion.
“Growing up in the shadows of Foreman Field, it’s hard not to follow and maintain contact with the successes of ODU athletics,” Selig said.
Selig’s connection with the Monarchs teams he grew up watching will be much stronger now.

Football Arms Race Engulfs the CAA
Conference revels in rising stature, but costs prompt two of its programs to fold.
William & Mary will play Villanova on Friday night in the division I-AA football semifinals, with the winner becoming the sixth Colonial Athletic Association team in seven years to reach the national championship game. The bid will serve as further evidence that the CAA has established itself as the preeminent conference in the country at its level.
Yet the success comes just eight days after Hofstra dropped its football program, becoming the second CAA school to discontinue football in as many weeks (Northeastern dropped football Nov. 23). Although the impetus for the two schools was different, both were byproducts of the increasing costs associated with maintaining college football teams – even in college football’s second tier.
The two contrasting fates come at a critical time for the conference, with the dominance at the top and the desertions at the bottom threatening to create a landscape of haves and have nots.
Four Teams Here, All the Rest There
With two CAA teams dropping football, Maine and three other schools find themselves isolated.
They are fierce rivals on the football field.
Off the field, the universities of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island are about to come together like never before.
In the wake of the news that Northeastern and Hofstra have dropped football, athletic directors from the four programs will meet Dec. 21 with Tom Yeager, the Colonial Athletic Association commissioner, to advocate for themselves in a league whose alignment and dynamic has changed dramatically.

Cadet King Selected For Roll For Second Straight Year
For the second straight year, redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Chad King (Springfield, Va.) has been selected to attend the All American Bowl as an escort for this year’s high school athletes.
UNH Football Notebook: CAA Expansion Won't Affect 'Cats Short-Term
DURHAM — There are numbers CAA commissioner Tom Yeager has a pleasure trying to crunch, and others that present more of a challenge.
Start with the tough ones. Two years from now, the CAA will welcome its 13th football-playing member, Old Dominion, which will be lodged in the league’s South Division and unbalance an unbalanced league schedule even more.
In 2012, Georgia State will bring the membership to 14, and play as a nominal member of the North Division, but with a specially-crafted schedule.

First BCS Transfer To Join Football Monarchs
NORFOLK, Va. – Virginia transfer Jason Fuller has been added to the Old Dominion football roster, it was announced on Friday by Monarch head coach Bobby Wilder.
“I am excited with the signing of Jason Fuller,” said Wilder. “Jason is our first B.C.S. transfer. He has everything we are looking for in a student-athlete at Old Dominion. He has an undergraduate degree from one of the top business schools in the country, he is a great person, and he is passionate about playing football at Old Dominion. When I first asked him why he would consider transferring from UVA to ODU, he simply said I want to be part of something special. That, as much as his football ability, excited me as the head coach.”

Opinion: Additonal FB Expansion Could be Coming Soon to CAA
The Colonial Athletic Association will swell to 14 football schools in 2012, when Georgia State joins.
Too many? Too few? Or just right?
Rather than fret about growing too big too fast, maybe the league will say what the heck and just super-size it.
If it does, there are two schools that would be a geographic fit for the league - surely more of a fit than Georgia State. Adding them would be cost effective at a time when schools everywhere are looking to save wherever they can.
Old Dominion Keeping Alexander as Broadcaster
June 12, 2009) Ted Alexander, the play-by-play voice of the ODU men’s basketball team the past two seasons, will call the action for the ODU football broadcasts this fall and will continue in the same capacity for men’s basketball games, as announced today by Old Dominion University and CBS Collegiate Sports Properties, the multi-media rights partner of Old Dominion University.
“I’m ecstatic to be named the Voice of the Monarchs,” said Alexander. “I’ve had a great time working with the men’s basketball team the past two years and can’t wait to be a part of the re-birth of the Monarch football program.”
