Letter from President of Black College Sports Network to HBCU Conferences
Open Letter to the HBCU Conferences - Please Post & Pass Along
The following letter was sent to each of the HBCU Conference Commissioners on Thursday 24 June 2010 . As an Alum & Fan I was concerned about the direction in which HBCU sports were headed. As a business man I am disappointed with the process and conduct as a whole in regards to the way that ” our business” was being managed. With that in mind and in an effort to assist with the correction of our path I reached out to the leaders of the CIAA, MEAC, SIAC, & SWAC. This gesture was to offer assistance in creating an aggressive plan that will benefit ALL HBCU’s athletically and academically!!! I am pleased to say that I have gotten positive, open-minded responses from most of the commissioners and we are now into the next phase of planning a summit.
Angel City Classic Called Off, Texas Southern Left with 10 Games
Much to our regret, we are shifting our focus and planning for a 2010 Angel City Classic (ACC) to a 2011 event. In spite of the economy, our organization remained optimistic up until the extended deadline however; we were not able to gain the needed sponsorship agreements necessary to produce the event in a manner which fans have come to expect. Our efforts did activate much verbal interest in the Angel City Classic and we look forward to continuing to cultivate this into future formal agreements with corporate sponsors. While our Title Sponsor, Farmers Insurance Group remained committed to the 2010 event, other challenges directly affected our ability to proceed towards a September classic this year.
A Tale of Two Conferences: SWAC supports Legacy Bowl; MEAC schools against it
On paper, it seemed brilliant and simple.
The Legacy Bowl would pit the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference – against each other. Airing on ESPN, it would guarantee a $3 million payout to be split by the conferences. It would also end the arguments, such as when South Carolina State edged out Prairie View A&M for the Sheridan Broadcasting Network’s Black National Championship – neither team played each other (in fact, the MEAC and SWAC rarely play each other).

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Heritage Bowl, pitting schools from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) will be restored under the name of the “Legacy Bowl".
This report comes to College Sporting News through sources on TSPNSports.com, who heard the initial report on the Jaguar Journal radio show out of Baton Rouge, La.
An Idea Whose Time Has Come At TSU
You know the saying about not remembering history and our being condemned to repeat it?
Well, Texas Southern University hopes that remembering some of its glorious football history might help it relive it.
Tigers greats will gather tonight to celebrate the inaugural class of the Texas Southern Football Hall of Fame. The idea, pushed by TSU coach Johnnie Cole, a TSU legend and almost certain future inductee, is long overdue.
A History of Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium
The stadium has been the site of many historical games and events, but now it’s use and appeal is slowly fading away
It is a Saturday afternoon in early October and some 11,000 football fans are sitting in the stands of Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium under a dark, hovering sky. On the field below, the Jackson State Tigers are in the midst of a conference battle with the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff and have just secured a 7-3 halftime lead.

Around FCS: Differing opinions on SWAC's playoff future
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - In the Southwest Athletic Conference, there are the battles both on the field and away from the gridiron.
Teams such as Jackson State and Prairie View would love to challenge themselves in the FCS playoffs, even at a time when commissioner Duer Sharp has proclaimed that the SWAC has no desire to return to the playoffs.
And then there are teams such as Grambling, Southern and Alabama State that would prefer to play nationally-televised, regular-season games on the opening weekend of the playoffs, rather than make themselves available for the postseason.

Two TSU Coaches Earn Internships with the Houston Texans
Texas Southern defensive tackle coach Tremaine Jackson and linebacker coach Archie McDaniel will spend part of their summer working with the Houston Texans.
Jackson and McDaniel were chosen to participate in the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship Program. Walsh introduced the concept in 1987 when he brought a group of coaches to 49ers training camp in Rocklin. The program was adopted by the NFL and since then, it has brought more than 1,300 minority coaches into NFL training camps.
Texas Southern: From unknown local to Oakland Raider
In 2009, the Oakland Raiders will feature two Montgomery County natives, both from Silver Spring. You probably know about 2009 first-round draft pick Darrius Heyward-Bey.
But does the name Derrick Gray ring a bell? Be honest; it does not. That is precisely why his story is so amazing. “I try not to look back, because there’s still such a long way to go,” said Gray, set to begin his second year with the Raiders. “But it is kind of crazy.”
SWAC Likely to Move Back to Nine-Game Conference Schedule
Three summers ago, the athletic directors of all 10 Southwestern Athletic Conference schools agreed to move to a seven-game conference football schedule, rather than the nine-game schedule that had previously been used.
The thinking was the creation of more nonconference openings would allow SWAC schools, which compete in the Football Championship Subdivision, to schedule games with schools from the Football Bowl Subdivision, games which usually come with a sizable payout.
SWAC Announces 2009 Thursday TV Schedule
The Southwestern Athletic Conference has announced its four-game Thursday football schedule for the upcoming 2009 season.
All televised Thursday games will be shown live on ESPNU, beginning on Oct. 1 with Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff hosting Alcorn State at Golden Lion Stadium. In 2008, the teams played on Thursday night, with the Braves taking a 13-3 home win on Sept. 18.
Addition of Texas Southern underwhelming at best

Football Supplier to FCS Schools Facing Blitz from Campus Activists
Russell Athletic, a major supplier of sports apparel to collegiate and professional sports teams, is facing an all-out blitz from campus activists.
Twenty-five U.S. colleges have cut ties to Atlanta-based Russell over alleged abuse of workers’ rights at its plant in Honduras. Russell supplies game uniforms and accessories to schools across the country, including four historically black college leagues: the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Southwestern Athletic Conference and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Texas Southern, Houston Dynamo Partner in Stadium Deal
HOUSTON - Texas Southern University has reached an agreement with the Houston Dynamo to be tenants in the proposed downtown stadium that would become home to the Major League Soccer franchise.
“We have an agreement-in-principle with the Dynamo,” said Charles McClelland, TSU’s athletics director in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. “We still have some minor issues to work out, but we’re very, very excited about the opportunity to join the Dynamo in this new downtown stadium.
“It’s the single most influential factor to move our program forward. This stadium will not only boost enrollment for the university, it will allow us to have a competitive program with top-notch facilities.
Opinion: SWAC Operating In Past
The SWAC might as well be in the dark ages - and commissioner Duer Sharp is desperate to do something about it.
Conference coaches currently exchange game tape early in the week before playing each other. And it’s literally tape.
Sharp knows the league needs to step into the 21st century and, in part, blames the system for the SWAC’s 2-12 record against nonconference teams this season.
“You look at other conferences and they’re dealing with digital video that they exchange via the Internet,” Sharp said. “You’re going out there and playing teams with one arm tied behind your back.
